Uber is available in many places around the world but the company is still expanding and is planning to arrive to other areas soon. The popular ride sharing service is available in over 60 countries and more than 400 cities around the world. The company now expects to arrive to Puerto Rico this summer and some residents are happy with the news. Uber is easy to use and becomes popular in most places it arrives to. Puerto Rico’s public transportation services have also been affected by the economic crisis, so many residents like the idea of Uber offering its service there.
On Tuesday, government officials talked about a proposal that would allow companies such as Uber to arrive there. In the next few weeks, the company will focus on finding Puerto Ricans interested in becoming drivers. according to a spokesman.
Uber has quickly expanded these last few years but it hasn’t been easy. The service was suspended last year in France after a number of protests. In Mexico, taxi drivers protested against the service. Taxi drivers in Brazil did the same. Taxi drivers in Puerto Rico might be the next to protest. A president of a taxi union does not like the idea, he says drivers are already working 14 or 16 hours a day to make money. He added that this would be devastating for them.
Some Puerto Ricans have welcomed the idea and can’t wait for the service to arrive since there are only a few options for those who don’t have a car.
Puerto Rico’s population is just a little over 3.5 million people but has an 11.6 percent unemployment rate. The island is currently suffering through an economic crisis and many schools have been closed. Teachers have lost their jobs and the unemployment rate is higher than any U.S. state. Uber’s decision to expand there is good news for some while others don’t think it will help at all.
