When it comes to music, names can explode and die out within just a couple of years. It’s all too common for an artist to come out onto the scene and disappear before they have a chance to really showcase what they’re about. Chance the Rapper is a rapper/singer/songwriter who has been releasing music for the last four years or so, which makes him a relative newcomer to the genre. In this article, I’m going to discuss how he has been able to rise to fame, while also making sure to talk about how much he has profited off of his success.

How did Chance the Rapper Get Rich?
Chancelor Johnathan Bennett was born in April of 1993 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in a middle class neighborhood, with his father being a former mayor. Growing up, Chance wasn’t immediately drawn to rap like some people his age were. He initially preferred listening to soul and jazz, but he ended up forming an amateur hip-hop duo during his freshman year of high school. To this day, he credits Kanye West’s debut album as being his first foray into rap music, and he really found himself falling in love with the genre. As a high schooler who wanted to become a major rapper, Chance was obviously mocked by peers and teachers alike. Bennett put together some minor performances in libraries, but he was admittedly unproven.
This all changed in 2011, during his senior year of high school, when he was suspended for ten days for being found with marijuana on campus. Chance was able to turn this negative into a positive, and he spent the lost time recording his first mixtape. The tape, entitled 10 Day was recorded and released completely independently. He released his first song, “Windows”, to the public in December, and a lot of local buzz started to surround the release of this tape. Chance didn’t have a massive fan base or anything, but he was widely seen as being a promising rapper looking to come out of Chicago. 10 Day was released in April of 2012 as a free digital download, and it saw explosive success.
As a free download, the tape initially attracted attention for being inexpensive legal hip-hop music, but people began to see the real merit behind Chance’s work. In July of 2012, Bennett forged his first major connection in the industry when he appeared on Childish Gambino’s sixth mixtape, which only increased the buzz surrounding this young Chicago rapper. Following the success of their collaboration, Childish Gambino suggested that Chance join him during his 2012 concert tour, and he obviously accepted. However, Bennett was also eager to continue to put out more work. He released Acid Rap, a second mixtape, in April of 2013. This was also a free digital download, and it was even more well-received than his first. Fans and critics alike praised the album, and it ended up garnering a nomination for Best Mixtape at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards.
Outside of that, Chance continued to work alongside other artists in the industry and further develop his craft. Acid Rap was a massive hit, but he couldn’t let himself get complacent. In December of 2013, he was able to collaborate with Childish Gambino yet again, this time on Gambino’s album Because the Internet. By this point, most people familiar with hip-hop had caught wind of Chance the Rapper. In June of 2015, Chance was given the opportunity to perform at Bonaroo alongside Kendrick Lamar, and shortly after the festival he announced that he was going to be creating a mixtape alongside Lil B. Even better, Bennett was actually capable of working alongside Kanye West as a co-writer and vocalist on The Life of Pablo. This must have been an amazing experience for Chance since, like I said before, Kanye is the one who inspired him to enter rap music to beign with.
Most recently, Chance the Rapper was able to release his third mixtape entitled Coloring Book. The tape released in May of 2016, and it featured the likes of Kanye West, Jeremih, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Lil Yachty, T-Pain, and Justin Bieber. It was by far one of Chance’s more high-profile releases, with its release date being revealed on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Since entering hip hop, Chance has worked alongside artists like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Skrillex, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Fast forward to today, he was recently nominated for a whopping seven awards in the 2017 Grammy Awards. Bennett isn’t even 24 years old yet, and he’s rapidly becoming one of the biggest names in hip-hop. He may be only worth $5 million now, but I can see that number growing exponentially in the years to come.

Chance the Rapper Salary & Annual Earnings in 2015
The thing about Chance the Rapper is that he has had a tendency to release his music for free. Acid Rap and 10 Day were both available as free downloads, which means that he didn’t technically make any money off of them. In 2015, all Chance did was create a collaborative album Surf with Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment and a collaborative mixtape with Lil B called Free (Based Freestyles Mixtape). He made plenty of public appearances and worked with plenty of other artists, but he didn’t actually release anything on his own. With that being said, it can be estimated that he made anywhere between $250,000 and $400,000 for his musical work in 2015. (It’s worth noting that this number has probably gone through the roof since the release of Coloring Book earlier this year.)
How much does Chance the Rapper make per day?
Using that previous figure as a good starting point, we can perform some simple arithmetic to calculate a rough estimate of how much Bennett makes per day. Using that number, his daily income comes out to around $820 per day. However, keep in mind that that number is an estimate and it only really considers money that he has made off of music directly.

Chance the Rapper isn’t just a musician, though. In a sense, he’s also a figure in pop culture. Chance the Rapper’s Philanthropy
Even though Bennett didn’t come out of poverty, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t know people who were affected by it. Not only that, but he also recognizes that as a rapper, he serves as a role model for disadvantaged youth across the country. Chance has used his star power and wealth to help those in need. Over the years, he has supported charitable organizations such as The Empowerment Plan, the Get Schooled Foundation, and the Robin Hood Foundation. Chance is also well known for being a strong political activist, with a desire to stop gun violence in his hometown of Chicago.
Chance the Rapper’s Accomplishments
Chance stole headlines earlier this year when it was announced that he had been nominated for seven Grammy Awards. This is obviously a huge honor, especially when you consider that up until now he had yet to earn a single nomination. Outside of this major accomplishment, Bennett has won awards for Best Mixtape and Best New Hip Hop Artist at the BET Hip Hop Awards. Earlier this year, he won Best New Artist at the Soul Train Music Awards. In fact, the BET Hip Hop Awards was nominating him for Best Mixtape as early as 2013, for his work in Acid Rap.
