Walmart is now recalling a packaged salad after Florida customers found a dead bat inside the package. The two customers had actually ate part of the salad before noticing that the dead bat was inside. The dead bat was found inside an Organic Marketside Spring Mix salad.
The two customers who ate part of the salad before finding the decomposing animal bought the product at a Florida store. The company has told customers who have purchased this salad to discard it. Walmart has also said the customers who have just bought this salad can go back to stores and request a refund.
The bat found inside the package has been sent to a lab of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where it was tested for rabies. The CDC has released a statement saying both people report being in good health and that neither have any signs of rabies.
The recalled salads, which have a production code of G089B19, are only sold at Walmart stores. Fresh Express, the company that makes the salads, said it quickly removed the product from store shelves. The company added that only one line of its products had been affected. They released a statement saying that they take matters of food safety very seriously and that they rigorously comply with all food safety regulations.
CDC also recommended to anyone who may have eaten one of the recalled salads and found animal material to contact their local health department. They added that people who did not find anything in the salad are not at risk and do not need to contact their health department.
The recalled salads, which are five ounce bags of the Fresh Express Organic Marketside Spring Mix, are only sold at Walmart stores in the southeastern US. The salads were removed from the shelves over the weekend.
