A car that hit pedestrians has left one person dead and at least 20 others injured in New York’s Time Square. Witnesses say the car drove against traffic and then hit pedestrians. Reports say the driver was removed out of the car shortly after the incident.
The New York Police Department confirmed that the driver is in custody and that the area has been closed. The New York Fire Department said it was treating at least 13 of the injured on the scene.
The incident happened at a popular tourist spot and the area was crowded at the time it happened. The New York Police Department has said the incident does not appear to be terror-related but a witness told Reuters that the car drove against traffic before hitting pedestrians.
Police have reportedly said that the driver lost control of the vehicle and that it appears to be an accident. Several news sites are now reporting on social media that the driver in custody has a history of drunk driving. The Associated Press reported minutes ago that the driver who hit the pedestrians was in custody and being tested for alcohol.
Images show police sitting near the badly damaged vehicle, which appears to have been stopped by a bollard. Footage from the scene also shows emergency teams treating the people injured. One of the injured is being treated on the side of the road while another is being treated on the middle of the road.
US President Donald Trump, White House Secretary Sean Spicer and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio have been informed about the incident. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Twitter shortly after the incident that he was on his way to the scene. CBS New York confirmed on Twitter just a few minutes ago that Bill de Blasio and Andrew Cuomo were both at Times Square.
Just a few minutes ago, the New York Fire Department confirmed that one person died while 19 others were injured. The incident, which happened around lunch hour, has led to authorities closing the area as they treat the injured. A Honda sedan is reportedly the vehicle that hit pedestrians and was stopped by a bollard. Images after the accident show what appears to be the driver being detained by police. Police are currently investigating but it is believed to be an isolated incident.
