7 Disappointing Starts To The 2017-18 Football Season

Every year, there are teams that make big additions or simply have a roster that is expected to win. But there are always a few disappointing starts to the season. This year, we’ve seen a lot of big clubs struggle after having a good season last year. Here are seven disappointing starts to the 2017-18 football season:

Chelsea

Last year, Antonio Conte and Chelsea had a pretty good season, winning the Premier League. But things have been very different this time, with not only bad results in the Premier League but also the Champions League. Last month, the team had an embarrassing 0 – 3 loss against Roma. Chelsea are currently in second place in their Champions League group but they have also been a little lucky that Atletico Madrid, third in the group, is also struggling. In the Premier League, Chelsea is nine points behind first place Manchester City. They are currently in Champions League spots but Liverpool, Arsenal and Burnley are just three points away.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid has been a tough competitor in the Champions League for a while now but the team is in danger of missing the next round this year. The team has scored just two goals in four games. The defence continues to be excellent with just three goals allowed but they are currently in third place with just three points. Atletico Madrid has made it to two Champions League finals in recent years but they’ll need to win their next two games and wait for other results to qualify for the next round.

West Ham

Zabaleta, Hart, Hernandez and Arnautovic all joined West Ham before the season started. But there has already been one big change after a really bad start to the Premier League. Just a few days ago, Slaven Bilic was fired by West Ham after a board meeting. The disappointing start to the season has left them in relegation zone with nine points in eleven games. Three days ago, David Moyes was announced as West Ham’s new manager. According to recent reports, Moyes will be given funds to improve the team during the January transfer window. William Carvalho is rumored to be one of the players that the club might try to sign. A deal for the midfielder during the last transfer window collapsed but West Ham is still said to be interested.

Everton

Its been a tough season for Everton in the Premier League and Europa League. The club made a number of moves in the transfer window but they haven’t worked. Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson were some of the players that the club added. Lukaku did leave but it appeared that the club had done enough moves to at least compete for the Europa League spots next season. The Premier League does have a lot of games left so there is time to recover but it’s a different story in the Europa League, where they have managed to get just one point in four games and are already eliminated. In October, Ronald Koeman was fired as manager after winning just two out of the last 13 matches. The decision came as Everton was 18th in the table with eight points. They are now in 15th place.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund has been very good in the Champions League group stages in recent years. But its been a different story this season. The German club has just two points in four games and needs two wins and other results to qualify. Losses against Tottenham and Real Madrid complicated things but the most disappointing results have been two 1 – 1 draws against Apoel. Dortmund are currently third in the Bundesliga with 20 points.

Real Madrid

Its been a very disappointing start for Real Madrid this season, losses against Girona and Tottenham have led to a lot of criticism from the Spanish media. The shocking loss against Girona complicated Real Madrid’s chances of winning La Liga. Real Madrid have never won a league after falling behind eight points and while it isn’t impossible since only 11 games have been played, their biggest rival Barcelona have made an impressive start. The bad results continued in the Champions League, with a 1 – 3 loss against Tottenham, who now lead the group with ten points.

Benfica

Benfica are usually in the mix for the next round of the Champions League but their current numbers in the group stage are shocking. The club has 0 points with just one goal scored and ten goals allowed in four matches. The group has Manchester United, Basel, CSKA Moscow and Benfica. Looking at the groups before the matches began, many fans would probably put Manchester United and Benfica as the most likely to advance but the Portuguese club is having a really bad Champions League. Benfica is doing okay in the Primeira Liga, just five points behind first place Porto.
