GameStop Suspends Its PowerPass Program

Last month, GameStop announced a rental service called PowerPass. The service would allow gamers to rent as much used games as they wanted for a six time period, with the only condition being that they would only be able to check out one game at a time.

Its been less than two weeks since the program was announced but the company has already suspended it. Kotaku reports that GameStop has suspended the program indefinitely.

It is not yet known why the company decided to suspend the program. The PowerPass service, which was a $60 subscription for six months, was announced back in October 30. One of the best benefits about the subscription was that gamers would be allowed to choose one game to keep after the six months.

The rental program was scheduled to begin on November 19 but it appears that gamers will have to wait and that’s if the company decides to bring it back. Kotaku reports that GameStop employees were told to remove all signs and everything about the rental program service. A spokesperson recently said the suspension had been made due to program limitations.

Polygon did receive a reply from GameStop, which said that they had elected to temporarily pause the launch of the subscription service based on a few program limitations they have identified.

The good news is that the statement also said that the people who had already subscribed to the rental service can bring back the pass and video game they had checked out to receive a full refund. GameStop is also allowing those who have the subscription to select any pre-owned game for free.

The rental program had already gone through a soft launch in some locations just a few days ago. The official debut was scheduled to take place on November 19. GameStop has not revealed when or if the program will actually return in the future.

In other GameStop news, there is currently a four for $10 used game promotion. There are over 3,000 titles that qualify for this sale. The sale mostly has older titles but there are plenty of classics to choose from. The sale will run through December 3 and the discount is reflected during the checkout. The company also has deals on many of the older consoles, including the Nintendo GameCube and PlayStation 3.
