The Apple iPhone X will soon be arriving to three South American countries. Apple’s premium phone will first be released in Colombia on December 1 while Chile and Brazil will have it on December 7 and 8.
The phone will be available in those three countries at select carriers and authorized resellers. Prices will remain right around the same for Colombia and Chile but not in Brazil, where it will be available in two Apple Stores.
We don’t know how many iPhone X’s will be available for sale in each country but those planning to get it in Brazil will need to have double the money. The iPhone X will start at 6999 Brazilian Reals, which is around $2,165. The iPhone X starts at $999 in the US, meaning the price in Brazil is more than double.
The iPhone X is Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever but many already knew that it was going to get pricier in the South American country. Brazil has a 60 percent import tax on products that cost up to $3000.
High prices for tech products in Brazil is nothing new. Back in 2013, when the PS4 was released, gamers around the world learned that the console would cost $399. But in Brazil, the import tax made the console super expensive. The console’s $1,850 price in Brazil led to Sony releasing a public statement in which they explained that the price was not good for gamers and their brand. In 2015, Nintendo closed its operations for distribution in Brazil. The company explained that it had made the decision due to the import taxes and challenges on the local business environment. At the time, Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii U, was selling for over $800. The games were also $20 – $30 more.
Apple has not released information on the prices for Colombia and Chile. The company also hasn’t given a release date for other South American countries.
The iPhone X was released in the United States and many other countries on November 3. Pre-orders began on October 27 and the phone was sold out in minutes. Apple later said in a statement provided to CNET that demand was off the charts.
The iPhone X was one of three phones that the company announced in September. The other two phones, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, were released a few days after the announcement. The iPhone X starts at $999 while the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus start at $699 and $799.
