Larry Brown honestly believes they would. The SMU coach has never been afraid of making outrageous comments and this seems like one of them.

The coach who has worked in the ABA and NBA, made these comments before his Mustangs’ opening-round matchup against UCLA on Thursday.

Larry Brown just said “I honestly believe Kentucky would make the NBA Playoffs in the East”

Was This Comment Necessary?

The Kentucky Wildcats have been superb throughout this season and many see them as the next NCAA tournament champion, but are they NBA level? They would be ideal for the Eastern Conference, who has a list of bad teams. They have the Sixers and Knicks, two franchises losing on purpose, also known as tanking. Then, they have the struggling Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons, who are still recovering from the poor work done by their previous general managers and coaches. The Brooklyn Nets? They’re just coming off a failed experiment with a bunch of overpaid veterans. Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets and Indiana Pacers? Both ravaged by injuries to their superstars and are fighting to stay in the playoff hunt. To conclude with, they have the legendary Boston Celtics, who are taking their sweet time to rebuild. The three teams that are tied for the seventh, eighth and ninth spots in the Eastern Conference are currently on pace for just 38 wins. If the Kentucky Wildcats continue their dominance, they could finish 40-0.

Kentucky Head Coach, John Calipari, does not agree with Brown, who said a few weeks ago that his team Calipariwould get wrecked by any NBA team, even the Knicks and Sixers. Two teams filled with washed up veterans and young inexperienced players.

I hear Coach Briggs got excited after the game last night. Let me be clear: If we played ANY NBA team, we would get buried. ANY.

This Kentucky team currently has a few players that could declare for the next NBA Draft. To top it off, they’re taller than most NBA teams and have a 34 game win streak. This is a pretty good basketball team.

Sure, Kentucky doesn’t play NBA level teams night in and night out, and that could be the difference. How many games would they win if they played in the Eastern Conference? They could probably take one or two games from the teams tanking and maybe surprise one fighting to get into playoffs, but they would most likely finish at the very bottom.

The Wildcats would not be able to handle a seven game series, if they shocked the world and made the NBA playoffs. It would even be extremely difficult for them to win 38+ games in the East to make it there.

In the end, this was just nonsense coming from Larry Brown, who knows the NBA very well. We should just stop talking about Kentucky and asking if they could play at the NBA level. Let the Wildcats do their thing at the college level. The run for 40-0 is still on, and that’s all they care about.
