Roma Ends Drought At Home

Roma ended its four-month winless drought at home with a 1-0 victory over Napoli in Serie A on Saturday. Its city rival Lazio kept up the pressure for a Champions League spot with a 3-1 win at relegation positioned Cagliari.

Seria A leader Juventus got some help from Carlos Tevez, who scored and took his team to a 2-0 victory against Empoli. The victory maintained their big 14 point lead, in what looks to be another league title for La Vecchia Signora.

One Goal

PjanicMiralem Pjanic scored with a nice counterattack in the 25th minute and Roma held on in the second half with spectacular saves from goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis.

“The last (four) months were tough in terms of results. So to win in front of our fans fills us with pride,” De Sanctis said.

Lazio, which missed several scoring opportunities, now has seven wins in a row and are just one point back from second place Roma.

Fiorentina also won against Sampdoria 2-0, putting them in fourth, just six points behind Lazio. Sampdoria is now fifth with 48 points and Napoli is one back with 47. The fight for Champions League spots is closer than ever.

AC Milan won a close one against Palermo for its first away victory since October, while its rival Inter Milan was booed at home after being held to a 1-1 draw against last place Parma.

All 10 matchups had to be played today due to the Easter Holiday.

Other Games

Cesena gave itself hope of avoiding relegation as it came back from a three goal deficit to draw 3-3 against Hellas Verona. The team moved to four points off safety, with 17th place Atalanta losing 2-1 at home to Torino.

10-man Sassuolo held on to beat Chievo Verona by the minimum and Genoa drew 1-1 against Udinese.

The security for the Roma-Napoli game was alert after the death of a fan in a shooting before last season’s Italian Cup final at the Stadio Olimpico.

Residents of the entire Campania region that includes Naples were not allowed to buy tickets for the match. Around 1,000 police officers were called in to keep everything safe and in order. There were no problems this time.

Pjanic scored the only goal of the match when he received a ball from the right flank from Alessandro Florenzi. The goal started from a counterattack.

Then in the second half, De Sanctis was on his game and denied everything that came his way. The 38-year-old stopped shots from Mertens multiple times and made a crazy save on a shot from Manolo Gabbiadini. He was simply a wall out there.

Fight for Champions League Spots

With 29 games played, the league is almost decided after Juventus kept its 14 point lead. There still is a race between the other three to keep a spot. Roma has 56 points, Lazio has 55, and Fiorentina is a little bit back with 49. There is only a 9 point difference between second and sixth place.
