LeBron: Cavs Need Thompson

LeBron James is happy with the moves the Cavaliers front office have done recently but stressed the team needs to sign Tristan Thompson to a long term deal.

James spoke to reporters yesterday at Cedar Point amusement park, saying the forward is the number one objective for the team and that he is a huge part of the roster.

Thompson turned down a huge deal during last season and it paid off because he was pretty good in the playoffs. The Cavs and his agent have had long talks but the two have different numbers. Thompson wants near max and the Cavs offer is nowhere near that. A few days ago, his agent Rich Paul, said that if Thompson Thompsonis forced to sign a one year qualifying offer worth $6.8 million, his client is leaving the team after the season.

The Cavs and Thompson discussed a deal last month but seem to be distancing because the team does not have enough to offer what he wants. According to several sources, Thompson wants a five year contract worth close to $94 million. The Cavs made an offer that is nowhere near close.

Paul was there with James, who was hosting an event for his foundation. Paul did not speak about the contract situation with Thompson. James made it clear that the Cavs have re-sign Thompson as the next step to keep the core intact.

New Contracts

The Cavaliers have already re-signed Kevin Love, who many thought was on his way out, Iman Shumpert and James Jones. The new contracts gave out more than $200 million in guaranteed money. The winners of the Eastern Conference this past season also brought in veterans Richard Jefferson and Mo Williams.

James also spoke about the meeting he had with Love before he decided to come back to the team. The forward agreed to a five year deal worth $110 million. Rumors throughout the season had him leaving the Cavs because he struggled at times and did not seem to be on the same page with James.

James said the two sat down and talked about the upcoming season and what could happen with the team going forward. Love, who suffered an injury early in the playoffs and was out for the rest, decided to stay with the Cavs after the meeting in Los Angeles.

Love is currently recovering from shoulder surgery after getting hurt against the Boston Celtics. James expects him back soon and the two hope they can get back to the NBA Finals.

LeBron James Family Foundation

The event Thursday was big for the LeBron James Family Foundation. James announced that he and the University of Akron will give out more than 1,000 scholarships to kids in Akron, Ohio. The forward has been sponsoring this for five years and is happy to have a program where kids get to see past high school.

The small forward has yet to announce if he will play in the 2016 Olympics, even though USA Basketball managing director has already confirmed that he has a spot secured on the team.
