Chelsea Board Discusses Manager’s Future

Chelsea has not done well in the league this season. The team has not recovered since the start after an impressive campaign last season. It was just reported that the club’s board held a meeting to discuss Jose Mourinho’s future. The Portuguese football manager arrived to the team in 2013 after leaving Real Madrid.

Chelsea’s season got worse as they lost to Leicester City on the weekend, dropping to 16th place in the Premier League. Chelsea now sits one point above relegation zone. Many thought it was a slow start and that the team would recover, but that has not happened.

Chelsea LogoIt is believed the owner of the club led the talks, but this is not the first time this happens during the season. Reports say the first talks happened after a loss in October. The results have not been good and the club is now way behind the league leaders. Mourinho’s future wasn’t in doubt after the first few games of the season, but this is the second time that news of the talks surface, so many believe he could be on his way out.

Reports also say that the situation got worse after the Leicester loss. The result wasn’t surprising though, Leicester City are currently the league leaders with 35 points, ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City by two and three points.

There are some candidates being mentioned for Chelsea’s manager position, one of them is Guus Hiddink, who was part of the club in 2009 after Scolari left the position. Hiddink’s time with the club was good, he won 11 of his 13 Premier League matches and the team finished third. He also won an FA Cup with the club, but did not come back the next season.

Diego Simeone is also considered a candidate. The Atletico Madrid manager has done well during his time with the club, despite losing players every year and bringing in new ones. He has won the league once and recently took his team to the Champions League final.

Chelsea is currently 20 points back from the leaders but made it through the group stage in the Champions League. Advancing won’t be easy though, they have to face PSG, the team that eliminated them last season. Chelsea’s next four games are against Sunderland, Watford, Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

Mourinho had a trophyless first season, but last year’s campaign was impressive. Many thought it would continue again this season with the roster they have, but it has been the opposite.

What should Chelsea do? Can they still make it to the top four? Let us know in the comments.
