Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) had made it clear in the past that it would keep expanding, but we didn’t know it would be this fast. The popular streaming service is now in 130 new countries, arriving to almost every market in the world. I say almost because it did not debut in China. The company also announced that it would keep adding more original content, this time showing two series that will be released in a few months.
The surprising news were heard from CEO Reed Hastings, who attended the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
New Content For This Year
Netflix was already big before the announcement, with more than 70 million subscribers around the world. The news come just days after many reported that the service would soon debut in Russia. Many expected the company to be in other countries by the end of the year, but the announcement quickly made the service available around the world.
Russia was one of the countries to receive the service after the announcement. South Korea, India and Poland were some of the nations that also received the service right away. In the event, the company’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, also showed trailers for two new series scheduled to debut later this year.
One of them is The Get Down, a musical drama television series that takes place in 1970s New York. The second series is The Crown, a television drama series about Queen Elizabeth.
The company has started 2016 with great news. The debut in other countries and the announcement of more original content is great for the service as it will raise its subscribers to a lot more these next few months.
Netflix had already mentioned in 2015 that it would arrive to other countries soon and that it would release more original content. The company released its first film a few months ago and already has series that have been nominated for awards.
This year will be very important for the company as they are investing to release more films and series. The service is very popular in the United States and its expansion has quickly made it a fan favorite around the world. Before the announcement, the service was only available in 60 countries, but now it is everywhere. No one knows if the service will arrive to China but the company will keep working on its expansion and original content this year.
