Surf’s Up was released nine years ago and the film received positive reviews. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 80th Academy Awards. The film made close to $59 million in North America and $90 million more around the world. The numbers weren’t the best for the studio but they plan on releasing a second film. The sequel comes with a twist though, it will feature WWE Superstars.
Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania will bring in the most popular WWE Superstars. The Undertaker, John Cena, Triple H, Paige and Vince McMahon will all be part of the new adventure. The characters will all go on a journey with Cody Maverick to a location where there are big waves.
Surf’s Up and Announcement
Surf’s Up follows the events of Cody Maverick, a 17 year old penguin. The character, voiced by Shia LaBeouf, wants to become a champion surfer after a visit from a legendary surfer a few years back.
WWE Studios and Sony Pictures Animation made the announcement yesterday, mentioning that the release will be sometime in the spring of 2017. WWE has a big enough audience to make this a successful release, so it will be interesting to see if it has better numbers than the first film.
The WWE Superstars already have their characters. John Cena penguin has the orange colors from his WWE shirt and wristbands, Triple H’s penguin has the elbow pads, The Undertaker’s penguin features his hat, Vince McMahon’s has the hair style and Paige’s character has purple wings and purple hair.
No one knows if Shia LaBeouf will return for the second film. The rest of the voice actors have also not been confirmed, but we’ll probably get more news soon as the film will be released next year.
Surf’s Up 2 will attract the WWE audience, especially from the characters that are featured. The Undertaker is a legendary wrestler with a great record at Wrestlemania, John Cena is a fan favorite, Triple H is the current WWE champion, Paige is a two-time WWE Divas Champion and Vince McMahon is the Chairman and CEO of WWE.
Surf’s Up will be released sometime in the spring of 2017.
