If I were to do a top ten richest rappers in the world not one of them would be a woman. I don’t know what it is about the Hip Hop industry, but to make it really big you need to be a dude. That isn’t to say there hasn’t been any female success in this genre. Plenty of women have made ludicrous amounts of money rapping, but you tend to find that they don’t limit themselves to spitting rhymes. You find more of a musical blend, more R ‘n B and pop influences in the work of the artists on this list. So without further delay, let’s count down the top 11 richest females in Hip Hop.
Top 11 Richest Female Rappers Real Net Worth 2018
11 – Trina $6 Million Real Net Worth
Katrina Laverne Taylor, better known as simply Trina, rose to stardom on the back of artist Trick Daddy’s single Naan Nigga back in 1998. Since then she has released five studio albums, and developed a strong fan base. While It cannot be said that she has hit worldwide fame, she is proof that moderate success can mean an awful lot of money, if you do it right. Her records have reportedly generated $2.5 million in sales, so she must have invested smartly with her earnings. With another record on the way this year, it will be interesting to see how she grows her latest windfall.
10 – MC Lyte $8 Million Real Net Worth
Lana Michelle Moorer, known professionally as MC Lyte, was the supposedly the first solo female to ever release a full length record, that being the critically acclaimed Lyte as a Rock in 1988. She has released eight studio albums in total, with the most recent being released only last year. She is also an accomplished actor, philanthropist and public speaker. She also owns and operates several profitable businesses, including a boutique in LA that specializes in modern and vintage accessories, and a talent development firm Sunni Gyrl Inc.
9 – DJ Spinderella $10 Million Real Net Worth
The other one from Salt-N-Pepa. I had no idea how big they were until I compiled this list. All of them are on it, eight, five and six, and I honestly couldn’t name one of their tracks. DJ Spinderella, real name Deidra Muriel Roper, joined the already formed group shortly before the release of their first record. She was a replacement for their original DJ Latoya Hanson. Hanson had stopped showing up to rehearsals and the management had been looking for a replacement for a while. DJ Spinderella went on to produce a few tracks for Salt-N-Pepa, and eventually an album of her own. It seems that most of her wealth stems from royalty payments.
9 – Eve Jihan Jeffers-Cooper $10 Million Real Net Worth
Better known by the mononym Eve, rose to fame in the early two thousands with her second album, Scorpion. The record sold moderately well, and was widely praised as an improvement on her previous album. The second single, Let Me Blow your Mind featured Gwen Stefani providing backing vocals, and it would be the first winner of The Best Rap/Sung Collaboration Grammy. Outside of music she is well known as an actor. She appeared in the Barbershop Trilogy in addition to a wide variety of television shows and video games.
9 – M.I.A. $10 Million Real Net Worth
The British-born, Sri Lanka raised Mathangi Arulpragasam took on the moniker M.I.A. as both a play on her name, and a reference to the initialism. Her work blends more genres and styles than you can count on both hands, merging Hip Hop with world music, electronica, avant-garde and others. She rose to fame in the mid two thousands with her debut album Arular. The record received universal critical acclaim upon release, and spawned four singles. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, spanning not only genres but mediums as well. She has seen success not only as a rapper, but also as a painter and director.
6 – Cheryl James $14 Million Real Net Worth
One half of the monumentally successful all girl rap troupe Salt-N-Pepa, Cheryl James is probably better known by her stage name, Salt. In the eighties and nineties the group released hit after hit, but their popularity faded somewhat in the late nineties. They were only gone for a few short years before returning to prominence with a reality show in 2007. The Salt-N-Pepa Show dealt primarily with the three leads reforming the band, and it ended with a tour. Since then the group has appeared in all sorts of places.
5 – Sandra Denton $15 Million Real Net Worth
I get how the Salt and Pepa two thirds of Salt-N-Pepa make more money than DJ Spinderella, but why Sandra Denton, better known as Pepa, has a million on Salt is interesting. She was one of the founding members of nationally popular all female hip hop group Salt-N-Pepa, who recently reformed and are touring again. She has had slightly more success outside of the original group as an actor. She had a recurring role on HBO’s Oz back in the early 2000s, before the group reformed. That was her largest role, and with the new found popularity if her girl group, it is unlikely that she will be returning to our screens as anything other than Pepa for the foreseeable future.
4 – Lil’ Kim $18 Million Real Net Worth
Kimberly Denise Jones, or Lil’ Kim, is one of the biggest women in conventional Hip Hop. She rose to fame in the mid nineties, gaining respect from The Notorious B.I.G. after performing a freestyle rap in front of him. Her debut album, Hard Core, was released in 1996 to commercial and critical success. Her first three records sold very well, but the critically reception of her fourth, The Naked Truth, has yet to be matched by any other female rap artist. She began recording material for a fifth album in 2011, after a ban was lifted, but we have still as yet heard any new material.
3- Missy Elliot $50 Million Real Net Worth
Melissa Arnette Elliot, better known as Missy Elliot, began her career by jumping from grip group to girl group. It wasn’t until the late nineties that she decided to go solo. A decision I’m sure she doesn’t regret. Her debut album, Supa Dupa Fly sold very well, and spawned a few successful singles. Her career in music would go on to be quite impressive, selling more than seven million records in the last two decades. Last year she appeared alongside Katy Perry at the Super Bowl, performing a medley of her most famous tracks. It caused a massive spike in her sales for that month. We are expecting a new album from Missy at some point this year.
2 – Queen Latifah $60 Million Real Net Worth
Queen Latifah, real name Dana Elaine Owens, has done so many things during her career that putting her at number one on this list is almost cheating. While it’s true that her early career was as a beat boxer and rapper, these days she is much better known as a talk show host, comedian, actor and model, not to mention producer and songwriter. But I feel it is important to highlight her early work, and point out the influence that it would have on later female artists. The issues she rapped about are still relevant today, domestic violence, street harassment, and I find it so strange that there aren’t more examples of hard hitting social commentary in modern pop-rap. Latifah has received wide spread acclaim for her work in both the music industry and the film industry.
1 – Nicki Minaj $70 Million Real Net Worth
Onika Tanya Maraj is a Trinidad-born US rapper better known by her stage name, Nicki Minaj. Her first two albums debuted at number one in the charts, and she has sold more records than anyone else on this list. The vast majority of her fortune comes from record sales, touring and endorsements. In addition to that, she was a judge on the twelfth season of American Idol, and judging by the fees paid to others for the same position, she made no small amount from that too. He rap style is quite diverse, and occasionally irreverent with her use of personas. Her international success is what sets her apart here, Nicki is huge all around the globe.
So there we are, the top 11 richest female artists in rap. If you think I missed anyone feel free to leave a comment.
