Tuft & Needle Mattress Review 2018

I didn’t know this when I started reviewing mattresses, but a lot has changed in that last few years in the industry. We have seen the rise of direct to consumer companies providing bespoke-esque products at low prices. We have seen the rise of foam mattresses, now not the cheaper less functional alternatives to coil mattresses but a viable alternative that can even feel more comfortable. And we have also seen the early pioneers of the modern mattress market be surpassed by the competition. Tuft & Needle was in on the ground floor of the mattress revolution. So we are left with one simple question: is Tuft & Needle still ahead of the game in 2016?

About Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 by Daehee Park and JT Marino. JT had just gotten married and went out to buy the couples first piece of furniture, a bed. He spent over three grand, expecting a perfect mattress. what he got was anything but. To make matters worse the returns policy was atrocious. He shared his experience with Park, his good friend, and they decided they could do better. Getting in on the ground floor of the direct to consumer mattress business, they marketed a product that could be shipped all over the country for free, had a high level of personal comfort and could easily be returned. “Tuft & Needle prides themselves on excellent customer service, high quality products and being the first to expose the corruption in the mattress industry. They are currently headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona and their mattress is one hundred percent American made.

The Tuft & Needle Mattress Build Quality & Materials

tuft-and-needle-1As is always the case I will start this review at the top. Tuft & Needle’s cover is a soft, breathable material blend. Now I would usually be up in arms over the lack of cotton, or at least some kind of highly porous Lycra, but the blend here is so fascinating that I have to commend them for their choice. It’s a polyester rayon blend. What is rayon? It’s a cellulose fiber. You take some wood pulp and make purified cellulose, then dissolve it and force it through a spinneret, producing filaments. These filaments are then chemically solidified to make synthetic fibers. It’s considered a semi-synthetic material due to this odd process. Combine it with polyester and you have yourself a porous, durable and soft-to-the-touch cover. Design-wise, the cover is very simple. It’s bright white with the Tuft & Needle logo lightly woven in. Design wise though the cover is very basic. It’s off-white all round with an embossed Tuft & Needle logo.

Tuft & Needle’s actual mattress is made up of two layers of high-quality, high-density polyurethane foam. A 7-inch support layer makes up the bottom layer while the top layer is 3 inches of their T&N Adaptive Foam ™.

Tuft & Needle Overall Review

So how does it feel? Personally I think it’s pretty good. What we have here is a very comfortable mattress with a high quality overall build. The mattress does a good job of radiating excess heat away, one of the benefits of not having a memory foam layer, they are terrible for heat retention. That said it’s one of the most firm mattresses I have tested so far, harder than the Leesa and the Casper at least.

Tuft & Needle Mattress – Pricing & Returns Policy

Here’s where things will get interesting. The Tuft & Needle personally isn’t may favorite direct to consumer mattress, but it undercuts everyone in price by a fairly large margin. A queen will set you back a mere $600, $300 dollars less than the same size in a Leesa and $250 less than the Casper. That is an astounding price for what you’re getting. Take a look at the table below for the rest of the prices. Tuft & Needle has chosen to offer the same, honest price every day of the year to every customer in lieu of incentivizing certain people or holidays. The mattress comes vacuum sealed for longevity and space saving during delivery, which is free.

Tuft & Needle pride themselves on their excellent returns policy. It was a bad returns policy that served as the catalyst of the company after all. You have one hundred days to decide if you want to keep the mattress, if you don’t like it they will grant a full refund and come pick up the mattress free of charge. A nice ten year warranty is the icing on the cake here.

Tuft & Needle Mattress – So Is it Worth it in 2018?

The Tuft & Needle does a lot of things well, most impressive is the price. But in this day and age there are so many mattress of higher quality available at so similar a price. It might be better to spend the extra $100 and get a Leesa or go all out and get a Saatva build. Know that if you go for the Tuft & Needle you will be getting a good nights sleep, I only worry that you’ll worry about the better night’s sleep you could have gotten instead.

Best of all you can currently get the Tuft & Needle mattress at Amazon.com with prime shipping by clicking here.

Our Recommended Add-Ons

Mattress Protector – Even at the low price point of the mattress it’s always smart to make it last as long as possible. That’s how you really save money on mattresses, the more years you get out of it, the better the bargain was. I advise you to invest in a good mattress protector. Get one online, stores tend to over charge for them these days. I recommend the SafeRest. Highest rated product on the market, protects against everything ,spillage, insects, nuclear explosions, you name it SafeRest will survive it. You can find it on amazon, click the link for a discount.

Sheets – Always, always, always but real high thread count cotton sheets. So few mattresses use pure cotton anymore, such a shame, so it makes getting your own all the more important. When you make the switch to these you will feel the difference. Here’s the ones I recently ordered from amazon, still haven’t arrived yet keep reading my mattress reviews this section will eventually have me telling you how great they are. 1500 Thread Count Wrinkle & Fade Resistant Egyptian Cotton Sheet.
