How To Get A Refund For Recalled Ikea Dressers – Instructions, Options & Fixes

In a press release at 9am on 6/28/16, IKEA announced a voluntary recall of several models of dresser and chest furniture did not adhere to United States Safety Standards. This voluntary recall is after the injuries or deaths of 41 individuals as of 2014, primarily due to the MALM series of dressers. In particular the pieces were found to be a tipping hazard that could cause serious injury or death, especially to children. As a means of handling the issue, IKEA has given two options to consumers.

Friendly IKEA associates will be more than happy to help you through this recall, no matter which option you choose.
Friendly IKEA associates will be more than happy to help you through this recall, no matter which option you choose.

The first is the option to acquire a wall anchoring kit for any of the pieces at no cost to the customer, which would allow these dressers and chests to adhere to safety guidelines. The second of these options is that IKEA is offering refunds (a full refund for all furniture purchased on January 1, 2002 to present, with a 50% refund for those purchased before this date) for those customers who would feel uncomfortable about having the furniture within their home, even with the anchoring equipment. For either case, it is required the consumer call IKEA toll free at 1(866) 856-4532 or register here. When contacting customer service in this manner, you will be allowed the option for the kit to be delivered (and if you are unable to attach it yourself, to schedule and appointment for an IKEA representative to do so), or to set up the process to have the furniture to be returned for refund, either by yourself or by IKEA pick-up services.

While awaiting the kit or refund procedure, the following is advised. In general any IKEA dresser or chest for children above 23.5 inches in height or 29.5 and above for adult oriented furnishings should be placed in an area away from any contact by children or laid flat if possible. After receiving the anchoring kit, abide by the installation guidelines as directed, or await for an IKEA staff member to arrive for installation or removal of the piece(s). The affected products are listed below by name, as all variants (3, 4, 5, or 6 drawer with and without mirror) are currently on recall notice.
