Hotly anticipated sequel (finally) has its lead
The original Pacific Rim film released during the summer of 2013, and it took the world by storm. The movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro, boasted a cast of names like Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day. Pacific Rim is about a program wherein humans around the world pilot massive mechas, called Jaegers. In the Pacific Rim universe, an inter-dimensional portal has opened at the bottom of the ocean, which enables massive amphibious monsters to enter the human world. Jaeger pilots train and fight against these monsters.
In essence, it’s a science-fiction monster movie that has giant robots in it. As one can probably imagine, this concept went over exceptionally well. The film grossed $411 million worldwide, pulling in close to $115 million from China alone. Pacific Rim was highly praised for its visual effects and for its fun dialogue and cast chemistry. Not only that, but it was also praised for being a film that boasted a particularly diverse cast. The world rejoiced (but was not altogether surprised) when a sequel for the film was announced in 2014.
It’s sort of been in production hell since then, however. The sequel was confirmed in June of 2014, and it was given a tentative release date of April of 2017. The intention was to begin production in late 2015, and Pacific Rim director Guillermo frequently confirmed the return of different cast members, like Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Hunnam. However, by late of 2015, production was halted due to conflict between the movie’s production companies. Just a few months ago, luckily, Steven S. DeKnight was announced as director of the sequel and production began to move forward again.
Today, John Boyega himself took to Instagram to confirm reports that he was slated to star in the film. Boyega is pretty new to the acting world, but he has been keeping himself really busy lately. The young star hasn’t even wrapped production on Star Wars Episode 8 yet, and he’s already lining up his next major project. Although this news isn’t much, Pacific Rim fans can rejoice in knowing that significant strides are actually being made to make this sequel happen.
What can we expect from Pacific Rim 2?
We have been given small nuggets of information on Pacific Rim 2 over the course of the last couple of years, and with shooting imminent, they become relevant again. Keep in mind, it’s possible that some of these ideas aren’t relevant anymore. Years is a long time for these sorts of creative ideas to float around, and so it’s fully possible that some of these concepts have since been trashed. Regardless, here is what we know so far:
- In June of 2014, Guillermo del Toro announced that Pacific’s Rim’s main characters, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) would be returning for the sequel.
- In November of 2015, del Toro stated that the film would take place several years after the events of the original Pacific Rim, primarily focusing on the effects of the previous Kaiju war. He also confirmed that Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) would be making a return.
- In January of 2015, Zak Penn (whose writing credits include films like X2 and Men in Black) said that the film would focus primarily on the origin of Kaiju.
- In November of 2015, it was revealed that the sequel’s working title was Maelstrom. (Working title doesn’t usually mean that that’s the official name for the film, however.)
John Boyega’s casting could also be seen as somewhat significant to the film’s overall story. Boyega is much younger than Pacific Rim’s original stars–Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Hunnam are in their mid thirties now. A press release from Legendary Pictures announces that Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s character of Stacker Pentecost. It’s very interesting to see how this film will usher in this new era of Jaeger pilots, and I know that I’m personally crossing my fingers that production continues to proceed smoothly.
