Released in June of 2016, the OnePlus 3 is one of the most modern phones out on the market, with some of the most astounding features. Running the new Android 6.01 Marshmallow right out of the box, and featuring 64 GB alongside a 16MP camera, it’s easy to see why anyone would want to buy this phone. However, some users have noticed some problems when it comes to posting those high definition photos on Facebook or Instagram, as their WiFi connection may be acting up. Here, we will take a look at why your OnePlus 3 may be having trouble connecting to your local network and how to fix it.
OnePlus WiFi Issue #1: It’s The Router.
In some cases, not being able to connect to WiFi isn’t actually the phone’s fault. Modems can sometimes be a little finicky in regards to connectivity, and can drop service for devices intermittently. To test if this is the case, first test the network using another device (preferably another mobile device). If neither this nor the OnePlus can connect, resetting your modem is likely the best option. To do this, remove the Modem from its power source for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. In accordance with the classic “turn it off and turn it back on again” solution for nearly every tech problem, this should solve your problem within 2 or 3 minutes. It also doesn’t hurt to restart your phone during this time as well.
OnePlus WiFi Issue #2: Your Phone Isn’t in the Mode to Connect
As with many phones, the OnePlus 3 has some settings that greatly interfere with WiFi connectivity, if not totally disabling it. Be sure to check to see if your phone is currently in Battery Saver Mode, Airplane Mode, or being used as a WiFi Hotspot. In the former, there is a good chance that connectivity is greatly inhibited as a means of preserving battery life, and the latter both wholly disable WiFi connectivity. To fix this issue, simply disable these settings.
OnePlus WiFi Issue #3: A Loss of Credentials
This problem tends to present itself after a WiFi password reset, or resetting the modem itself. The device will not connect to your network as the network doesn’t “recognize” the phone as a valid device. To make them work together yet again, follow the steps listed below.
Step 1: Go to Settings, then Mobile Network, and finally select Network Operators.
Step 2: Select the network you wish to connect to, and (this is optional) select to forget the network.
Step 3: If you selected to forget the network, then reselect it. In either case, now re-enter the password manually and wait for a connection.
Step 4: Finally, restart your phone to ensure the connection is persistent.
OnePlus WiFi Issue #4: Appocalypse
Have you recently updated or downloaded a new app, only to find later on that your WiFi connection was lost? The problem could indeed be an app, especially those who have what are referenced to as “blanket permissions”. These apps can access typically every setting on your phone, including those settings that allow for WiFi connections. Any app that can be blamed for active WiFi interference can be considered a severe security risk, and may put your data (including pictures, contacts and bank data) in jeopardy. Further indications that this may be the cause of your WiFi woes is a particularly hot phone, typically erratically experiencing drops in performance, and the presence of ads, even when apps are closed. To remedy this issue, first delete any app(s) that have been downloaded recently, which have aforesaid permissions. Next, restart your phone. If this was indeed the cause of your connection issues, you should find connecting to a modem much easier.
OnePlus WiFi Issue #5: The Phone Needs to Chill
Even without rogue apps overtaking settings, your phone may still be prone to overheating. Using intense apps (such as Pokemon Go), having multiple high intensity apps running at once, or using your phone extensively in hot environments can interfere with your WiFi connection as well as destroy your battery life. To solve this issue, close out apps after use via the Task Manager, take breaks from intense apps (10 minutes per every hour of use is usually adequate), and turn your phone off from time to time. These will typically allow for your phone to begin operating at normal temperatures, and you will see an increase in battery life as well as WiFi connectivity.
OnePlus WiFi Issue #6: The OnePlus 3 Needs a Reset
If none of the above solutions have worked for you, a factory reset may be your last and best hope. Now, while there are two options for factory resets on the OnePlus 3 (a “soft” and “hard” reset) we will only focus on the hard reset method, as it is most likely to solve connection issues. To perform a hard reset, follow the steps below:
Step 1: First, back up all the data on your phone to the Google account you have on file. This will allow for easy recovery of contacts, pictures, etc. which will be deleted form the phone in this process. To do so, merely sync your Google account. Do keep in mind, music files, videos, pdfs and other such files may not be properly saved in this method, so it is best to connect your phone to a PC via USB, and open the phone’s folders from there, and copying and pasting the data to a dedicated folder.
Step 2: Now that you are properly backed up, set your phone into recovery mode. To do this, first turn off your phone. Next, press and hold the Volume Down button and Power buttons simultaneously. After a few seconds, recovery mode should activate and the prompt will ask what language you prefer. Enter in your preferred language, and you will be taken to a main menu.
Step 3: In the recovery menu, use the volume button to go to the Wipe Data/ Factory Reset option and press the power button to select it. Press power again to agree to delete all data.
Step 4: Finally, after the Reset has completed select Reboot System Now, and press the power button. Now your phone should be as good as new.
After the reset has occurred, you can import your data from your Google account and resume use, with full WiFi capabilities.
