Originally founded by Keith Beaird and Kermit Speer, Rural King opened its first store in the summer of 1960 in Mattoon, Illinois. Starting out with only two employees, the company slowly encompassed more area as the business grew steadily. By 1970, a second addition had been added to the original store. After many decades of successfully selling farm supply, they opened up a 210,000 square feet corporate office and warehouse in 1999; the old locations were then donated to charity.
