Australia is home to many dangerous animals, including snakes and crocodiles. But a study published in the Internal Medicine Journal shows that one animal that we’re all used to seeing is the one causing the most deaths. The study, which first appeared in Royal Australian College of Physicians Internal Medicine Journal three months ago, was detailed by the health expert and research unit yesterday.
Horses can be dangerous animals but not the ones we think would lead the list of deadliest animals in Australia. The Internal Medicine Journal has found that these animals cause the most deaths. Australia has a number of venomous animals and while the horse is not one of them, they lead the list because 74 people have lost their lives after being thrown or trampled by them. Public health expert Ronelle Welton and the University of Melbourne’s Australian Venom Research Unit looked through hospital records from 2000 to 2013 and found that horses can be very dangerous. The expert and research unit looked at data from venomous and non-venomous animals, with the 74 deaths from horses being one of the most surprising finds.
The expert and research unit also found that there were 27 snake-related deaths in those years. Shark attack deaths were 26 while spiders did not cause any. The venom related deaths and injuries came mostly from bees and wasps. These animals were the cause of 33 percent of the hospitalizations examined by the experts in Australia. The experts found that there were 27 deaths from bees and wasps. Snake bites were 15 percent of the hospitalizations while spider bites had double the number at 30 percent.
Horses are one of the most surprising finds of this research as they are animals a lot of us see often. Australia may be home to some of the deadliest animals in the world but the research shows that some of the most dangerous animals such as spiders don’t lead this category.
Australia is also known for its unique animals. The country has more than 140 species of marsupials, including koalas and kangaroos.
The horse population of the world is estimated at 58 million, with Australia home to 221,000. The United States has the most horses in the world at nearly 10 million.
