The Best Quickbooks Alternatives – 2018 List

For most accounting and small business work, Quickbooks is considered entirely essential. Whether running a tech startup or a distribution company, accounting, billing and all the other features of Quickbooks may make it seem like the only game in town for those who wish to succeed in their own ventures. However, this is not the case. Here, we take a look at the best Quickbooks alternatives for 2018.

Why Might I want a Quickbooks Alternative?

When shopping for accounting software, it can seem like a one-size-fits-all plan is great for scalability, especially if you have big dreams for your brand. That being said, such thinking can in fact incur extra costs both in terms of finances and hours due to the larger systems needing typically more complex systems, more options, and as a result, more training for staff (or yourself).

In the same vein, there’s a good chance that while some large features may benefit most companies, smaller companies that share the field may have features that are more field-centric (for example, a program made by a bank-centric company may prioritize features regarding transfers and formatting, while a hospital-centric accounting company may focus more on HIPAA compliance).

Xero – Option 1A

XerorectanglelogoAn accounting program focused around bank transactions, this program is a great alternative to Quickbooks if you need an adaptable system as well as one that can handle plenty of financial traffic. With a primary focus on user friendly design, switching from payroll to customer transactions is an absolute breeze. Xero also allows for API integration for storefront use, and features embedded PayPal transaction applications, making transfers nice and simple. Plans start at $9 a month, and unlimited users even with the basic option, Xero is great for a business just starting out and can grow with you as needed. This is probably the best option for most businesses out there who want something other than quickbooks but maintain all the safe functionality. You can also get a free trial right now for Xero + activate a coupon for 30% off if you decide to stick with it by clicking here!

FreshBooks – Option 1B

fresbhooks-invoicingAs the name may imply, FreshBooks is a wildly popular and similar alternative to Quickbooks. With a similar one-size-fits-all format Freshbook makes it easy for businesses of all sizes to get up to speed quickly. Freshbooks is one of the easiest to use systems on the list & is probably the best option for any business that generates income via invoicing. The invoices from Freshbooks are easily the best we’ve seen from any of the platforms.

Integration partners is another major plus for this software, as it can integrate with services like Mail Chimp, Zendesk, and Salesforce right off the bat.  Also with a reasonable $30 cost for unlimited clients, is a pretty good deal when used to its greatest extent. If you are a service based business or a business that sends out a reasonable amount of invoices Freshbooks may be the best Quickbooks alternative around for your situation.

Best of all you can get a 30 day free trial right now for Freshbooks by clicking here.

Peachtree/Sage50 – Runner Up

peachtreeOne may be surprised to hear the Peachtree was one of the very first office software suites around, introduced near the start of the 1980’s. Now called Sage50 for the purposes of accounting software, this is about as close as you can get to a Quickbooks twin. With Mobile invoicing, one click profit reports, and payroll bundled into the basic version, expect to pay about $439 up front for a year of service for a user. For up to five, the price is about $56.50 per month but also includes automatic purchasing and tiered information systems. That said you can usually find a pretty good discount at Amazon.com by clicking here to see the current offers & discounts available.

GNUCash – Runner Up

gnucashDo you have only one accountant (perhaps yourself?) and no real wish to spend money on accounting software? Then GNUCash may be your best option for now. With a double entry equity system, an easy to use checkbook register, and statement reconciliation outside of automated transactions, this freeware also allows for the use of multiple currencies for international work. The one drawback? Multiple users cannot at any point be on the same system at the same time. This is pretty normal as per freeware, and again, if payroll and accounting is one person’s job (or you want to try your own hand at it) this isn’t so much an issue. Do keep in mind though, that this program is very much oriented towards small business and if you outgrow the pond, you may well outgrow this program as well.

Wave Accounting – Runner Up

waveAnother Freeware option, Wave Accounting allows unlimited user and transactions, at the cost of being shown ads while in system. Though not terribly intrusive, this does slightly impede a “clean, professional look” in some cases. The features present more than make up for the nuisance, though, which include the full bookkeeping essential suite, expense tracking, and unlimited invoicing which is great for plenty of application. One must keep in mind though, that printing checks is not supported, and there is only online tech support, which may take over 48 hours to respond to an issue. Though with the claim that over 64,000 invoices are created each day (as seen on their home page) it would appear that small businesses keep coming back, and for plenty of various trades is an absolute mainstay.

Did we not mention your favorite Quickbooks alternative program? If not, be sure to list it below in the comments, and why you enjoy said program.
