Philippines: Armed Police Deployed To Manila Resort After Gunshots and Explosions

Armed police have been deployed to the Resort World Manila after explosions and gunshots were heard in the area. Videos on social media show people running after the gunshots are heard. The Manila Times reports that dozens of people have been injured.

Police Now In The Area

The official Twitter account of the resort tweeted shortly after the incident that the area was in complete lockdown. They say the reports of gunfire began shortly after 2 a.m. local time. According to witnesses, gunmen were seen in the area. The news channel ANC reported that there were two gunmen. Officials have not confirmed anything so far but armed police has been deployed to the resort. The Manila Standard reported that masked men attacked the hotel and that some people suffered gunshot wounds.

CNN Philippines reports that police, SWAT team and firefighters are now in the area. Emergency teams said there was a fire on the second floor of the hotel. A source in the hotel told Reuters that police were in full control of the situation.

Several People Injured reports that at least 25 people are injured, including some seriously after they jumped out of the second floor windows. Philippine Red Cross said on Twitter that they had already transported three patients of Resorts World Manila. Ronald Romualdo, a maintenance worker at the resort, told DZMM Radio that he saw a woman fall from the upper floor while trying to escape. He said several people were injured.

A few minutes ago, AFP reported that Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. In recent days, authorities have also clashed with groups linked to Islamic State. Authorities have not confirmed if the attack on the hotel is linked to the recent clashes.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has not released a statement yet but White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has tweeted that US President Donald Trump is aware of the situation in Manila and that he is being provided updates by his national security team.

Pictures posted on social media by people in the area show emergency teams and police standing in front of the resort. Police have reportedly set up checkpoints across Manila.

Resorts World Manila is a popular tourist destination that has a mall, theater, casino and hotel. The resort has said on Twitter that they are working with the police to ensure that all guests and employees are safe.
