Within the last few years, Tori Kelly has been able to become a very prominent member of the music industry. She originally began on YouTube, and through the platform, she was able to become popular enough to warrant being signed by an actual record label. Today, she is considered a lot more than just a YouTube personality. Even though she became more “mainstream”, she still retained her loyal and dedicated following from YouTube. Tori Kelly’s Career
Tori Kelly was born in Wildomar, California in December of 1992. Thanks to her family, she became very introduced in music at a young age. In 2004, she was a participant on America’s Most Talented Kids, which she would go on to win. Because of this win, Tori was actually signed to a record label when she was twelve, but was eventually released due to conflicts within the label. She didn’t seem to be deterred by this development, however. Starting in 2007, she was posting videos on YouTube of herself covering different songs. Although YouTube wasn’t nearly as established then as it is now, this was still a viable way for her to establish a following and develop her portfolio a little bit. This was an important, developmental part of her career.
In 2010, Tori Kelly’s career took a slightly different direction when she auditioned to participate in season 9 of American Idol. Despite her best effort, she wasn’t able to reach the Top 24, which understandably devastated her. (She found a particularly large critic in Simon Cowell, who found her voice annoying.) Although Kelly was crushed by this failure, she kept working toward her goals. In 2012, she released an EP entitled Handmade Songs through her own label. This EP was written, produced, and recorded entirely by her. Despite it being such a low-budget operation, it would actually go on to sell very well, selling tens of thousands of copies. In 2013, she attracted a lot of attention by releasing the song “Fill a Heart” as a part of the “Child Hunger Ends Here” campaign.
Outside of this, Tori Kelly was also rapidly becoming a large figure in pop culture. She was a name that a lot more people were starting to recognize. In 2013, she was introduced to Capitol Records by her manager, Scooter Braun. Kelly was hesitant to tie herself to a record label at first, but she quickly realized that she didn’t really have a lot to lose by working with Capital Records. In October of 2013, she released her first major label release, an EP called Foreword, which sold tends of thousands of copies. Around this time, she was able to work with major artists like Ed Sheeran and Pentatonix. In 2015, she was actually nominated for Best New Artist at the 58th Grammy Awards, which definitely isn’t an accomplishment to sneeze at.
In more recent years, Tori Kelly has still been hard at work in entertainment. She provided the voice of Meena in the popular animated film Sing. During that same year, she kept herself busy with the Unbreakable Tour, which was supporting her debut studio album Unbreakable Smile. It ran from April of 2016 to May of 2017, and it went all over North America. Since then, Tori has continued to make waves by making appearances at different shows and collaborating with a couple of other smaller YouTube-based artists. Although she has definitely grown past her roots as a YouTuber, Tori has remained really humble through all of this. She’s remained true to herself and loyal to her fans, and I think it’s safe to say that she hasn’t really been changed by all of this recent fame.
