An internet sensation, Nash Grier originally rose to fame on Vine, where he had amassed over 11 million followers. Originally from North Carolina, he first got involved with the app during his teens, while attending Davidson Day School. Since Vine shut down, he has refocused his efforts on other projects, including his Youtube channel and various acting gigs. As of 2017, the nineteen-year-old has garnered over 4.8 million subscribers on Youtube.
Born on December 28, 1997 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Nash Grier is the son of Chad Grier and Elizabeth Floyd, the former of whom is one of his managers. The second oldest out of four siblings, he has two brothers- Will and Hayes, as well as a half-sister named Skylynn. Though not much is known about his early childhood, he do know that he was a freshman at Davidson Day School, a private school located in Davidson, when Vine came out. Like most teenagers, he quickly jumped onto the bandwagon.
How Nash Grier Became Famous
Creating himself an account, he put his self-taught video-making skills to use, in attempts to entertain his friends. Originally just a hobby on the site, it eventually turned into something greater as fellow users on the app began recognizing his work. Before long, his six-second clips were bringing in thousands of views- each. With that, his follower count also began to soar.
As he continued to upload more videos, his fan base grew further. Before he knew it, Grier was pouring endless hours into the app, crafting and re-crafting his clips into perfection. With time, his following surpassed the one million mark. Continuing to put himself out there on Vine, he went to collaborate with a number of big names including Robby Ayala, Jerome Jarre, Carter Reynolds, and Jack Gilinsky. By the time it was announced that the app was to be shut down, he had well over 12 million followers on Vine, making him one of the top users on the platform. At the peak of his career, it was said that he earned anywhere between $25,000 to $100,000 per advertised post.
Soon after his rise to fame, Grier was invited to join Magcon (“Meet and Greet Convention”), a group of social media stars who tour the country in order to meet their fans. From 2013 to 2014, the crew put on numerous shows across the United States; in doing so, they received further exposure.
At the age of sixteen, he moved to Los Angeles, California, to focus on his online career. Following his move, he finished his high school education via online schooling.
Earlier Controversy on Vine
In 2013, he posted a clip onto the app in which he said that taking an HIV test was something only gay people do. Though he was quick to delete the video, a copy of it later resurfaced on the internet in 2014. In response to his inappropriate behavior, he issued an apology on his Twitter account.
Nash Grier’s Other Endeavors
Since Vine shut down, Grier has been continuing to upload videos onto his Youtube account (though it seems like he has deleted many of his previous uploads). Since he first launched his channel in December 2012, he has amassed over 4.8 million subscribers.
Working alongside his management, the teen has released a number of mobile games including Challenged, Mobli, and Cash Dash. Not only that, but he’s also launched a website where fans are able to purchase an array of merchandise projects, as well as items from an exclusive clothing line from Aeropostale.
Nash Grier’s Acting Gigs
Like many other social media stars, Grier has also branched out into acting. In 2015, he landed his first major role in The Outfield, a sports comedy film which also starred Cameron Dallas, and Joey Bragg. Directed and produced by Michael Goldfine and Gil Kruger, it centered around three varsity baseball players who must make difficult choices both on and off the field during their final year of high school.
Then in 2016, he appeared on television for the first time in the TV series, The Deleted. A thriller, the story revolved around the disappearance of three unconnected strangers in Los Angeles, California. Playing the role of Ryder, he was joined by Madeline Brewer, Amanda Cerny, Spencer Neville, Daniel Zovatto, and Ian Nelson. Though reviews from critics were iffy at best, the show went on to receive a Webby Award for Top Online Film & Video.
Around that same time, he played a lead role in the mini-series, High School Cupid, a Cupid Inc. Story (2016). Of the fantasy genre, its cast also included Sarah Carpenter, Jordan R. Coleman, Jason Her, Sarah Kaidanow, and Ariana Lee.
Most recently this summer, he co-starred in the Netflix movie, You Get Me (2017) alongside Anna Akana, Taylor John Smith, Halston Sage, and Bella Thorne. Directed by Brent Bonacorso, it followed the lives of a four high school students, Tyler, Ali, Gil, and Lydia (played by Taylor John Smith, Halston Sage, Nash Grier, and Anna Akana respectively). Premiered on June 14, 2017 at the Los Angeles Film Festival, You Get Me was later released on Netflix on June 23, 2017.
