Another Company Has Joined The Foldable Smartphone Race

In recent weeks, Samsung’s plans for a foldable smartphone have made a lot of noise in the tech world. But we quickly found out that the company wasn’t the only one as ZTE joined the foldable smartphone race and recently introduced the Axon M, a phone with two displays.

Samsung and ZTE appear to be very interested in foldable smartphones but another smartphone giant might also join the race in the near future. We’re talking about Huawei, which is one of the biggest smartphone makers in the world. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, said in an interview with CNET that the company was also working on a foldable smartphone. He added that they already have a working sample but that the company isn’t ready to launch the device. Yu also said that they have two screens but that there is still a small gap, which they want to get rid of.

Only a few companies are said to be in the foldable smartphone race at the moment but most are planning a limited release or prototype unveil next year. Huawei could be one of the companies to unveil a device in 2018.

Large screens that stretch from edge to edge have been one of the biggest smartphone changes this year but 2018 could be quite interesting as foldable smartphone rumors continue to surface.

The foldable smartphone race has at least two of the top five biggest smartphone makers in the world. Earlier this month, a report mentioned that Apple is working with LG Display on a foldable smartphone for 2020.

A few days ago, ZTE launched the Axon M in the US. The device is the company’s first dual display smartphone. The two screens are held by a hinge and the phone can fold easily. The Axon M is an AT&T exclusive and will be released next month. ZTE has confirmed that it will be released in other markets, including China and Europe.

Huawei appears to be some time away from a foldable smartphone launch as Yu mentioned the gap between the screens. Huawei has released impressive devices in recent years and it will be interesting to see what they unveil in 2018.

Huawei, ZTE, Samsung and Apple have all made big improvements on their smartphones in 2017 but things could change a lot in the next few months. ZTE has already started with the Axon M and it wouldn’t be surprising to see more companies announce their plans for a foldable smartphone in the next few months.
