Lowe’s opened it’s doors in 1921. It was founded by Lucius Smith Lowe. His daughter inherited the store when he died in 1940. She sold it to her brother Jim in 1940, and he acquired a partner named Carl Buchan. Buchan ended up being the sole owner of Lowe’s after the two spilt on what direction the company should take. The company originally was more of a general store that sold groceries, snuff, horse tack, dry goods, and groceries. Buchan noticed that there would need to be a massive increase in construction after World War II, and expanded their product line to building materials and hardware. Now, in 2017, Lowe’s has expanded to over 1800 locations across the US, Canada, and Mexico.
