Nokia was once one of the most popular phone brands in the world but the company hasn’t given up on making a big return. Previous years were not so great as the competition and a Microsoft acquisition that didn’t go well left the company as almost a thing of the past. But Nokia has managed to change that in just a short amount of time.
In May 2016, Microsoft sold the Nokia branding rights to HMD Global and Foxconn. Rumors quickly began surfacing about a comeback and less than a year later, the company was back with a few phones. In December 2016, HMD announced the Nokia 150 and 150 Dual SIM, two phones that reminded us of the classic Nokia phones from the early 2000s.
The big release came a few weeks later, when HMD Global released the Nokia 6 in China. It was the first smartphone from HMD Global and the first Nokia branded smartphone since 2014. The release was an instant success in China, with the device selling out in minutes after receiving more than a million registrations. A global version of the Nokia 6 was announced the following month. In August, it was announced that the device had received more than one million registrations on Amazon India.
Nokia launched three smartphones at MWC 2017, the Nokia 6, 5 and 3. But their most talked about product was the remake of the Nokia 3310. The Nokia 3310 was very successful in the early 2000s and the remake of the phone caught the attention of everyone. The new Nokia 3310 did not have a large screen, dual cameras or any of the tech we see on current phones but it brought everyone back to the days where it was all about calls and text messages. Mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse said shortly after the launch that demand for the phone had been astonishing.
HMD Global has not revealed sales numbers but the company’s Chief Marketing Officer Pekka Rantala told Nokioteca that they are really happy about the sales, selling already millions of smartphones and tens of millions of basic Nokia phones. The company has since announced smartphones such as the Nokia 7 and 8. The Nokia 8 is its most powerful smartphone to date but that could change soon. The Nokia 9, which is rumored to be launching some time in January, is said to have a bezel-free display, Snapdragon 835 processor, dual cameras and 6GB of RAM. A new version of the Nokia 8 is also rumored.
Nokia’s 2017 story has been one of the most interesting in the tech world and the company appears to be working on even better smartphones to continue its comeback.
