7 Players Who Could End The Ronaldo and Messi Run As Ballon d’Or Winners

Two days ago, Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or for the fifth time in his career. The Real Madrid star was one of three players standing at the ceremony for the award. The win was no surprise as he’s been up there for a while. In the last ten years, the award has gone to Messi or Ronaldo. The two are still the biggest stars of their team and they will probably continue as strong candidates to win the award next year. But there are several players who could end their ten year winning streak. Here are seven players who could win the award in the near future:

Neymar was one of the three players competing for the award this year and that could continue for many years. The Brazilian star finished in fifth place last year and third in 2015. This year, he made a record setting transfer to PSG and currently has 15 goals in 18 appearances. Oh and he is only 25 years old, so he is just getting started.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane has been a scoring machine since becoming a starter for Tottenham. The English striker scored 31 goals in his first season as a starter and now has 90 goals for the club. This year, he finished in tenth place in the voting and is looking like a strong candidate after a great start to the season.

Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne has been brilliant this season, helping Manchester City remain undefeated for the first 15 games of the Premier League. The star midfielder has done it all for the club this season and is seen as a candidate to finish in the top ten next year. De Bruyne is currently in first in the EPL assists category with 8.

Paulo Dybala

Paulo Dybala is on the radar of many teams after impressive seasons at Juventus. The Argentinian striker has already appeared in a Champions League finals and is considered one of the best talents in the sport. Dybala is off to a great start this season, with 11 goals in 15 appearances. The star player finished in 15th place this season and could be a strong candidate in future editions as he has already shown that he can help take his team far in the biggest competitions.

Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe is 18 years old but he is already setting records in the sport. Just a few days ago, the PSG star scored his 10th goal in the Champions League and became the youngest player to reach that number. The record was previously held by Benzema, who reached that number when he was 20 years old. Mbappe recently made a move to PSG after a huge transfer and could be a strong candidate for the award for many years.

Eden Hazard

Hazard has been one of Chelsea’s best signings in the last few years and he is currently one of the best in the EPL. Hazard’s most recent ranking was a shocking one to many but the star player is still young and could become a favorite for the award if he has an amazing season. Things aren’t looking good for Chelsea in the EPL right now but the season is far from over.

Antoine Griezmann

Griezmann was one of the biggest drops in this year’s voting, finishing in 18th place. The France forward finished in third place last year after scoring 32 goals in 54 games. The star player, who is only 26 years old, has been an important piece for Atletico Madrid in recent years and has already appeared in a Champions League finals and was the top scorer of the Euro 2016 tournament.

Its been ten years of Ronaldo and Messi winning the award but there are so many stars in the sport right now that no one can rule out a surprise win next year. Ronaldo and Messi continue to be the most important piece of their teams, so it also wouldn’t be surprising to see one of them win the award again. Kaka, who won the award back in 2007 after beating Messi and Ronaldo, had a good reaction after Ronaldo’s fifth win. The retired footballer says his win is good for him because they always remember his win in 2007.
