Amazon Comments On Its First NFL Streaming Season

Back in April 2017, Amazon acquired the streaming rights to most of the Thursday Night Football games. The one year deal for the games was yet another addition to its Prime benefits. The games were available to Prime subscribers in the US and other countries. The games, which also aired on CBS and NBC, have now ended since the regular season is over.

With the NFL season now in the playoffs, Amazon has spoken on this move. Amazon Video head of sports Jim DeLorenzo said that they’re in the early stages but that they are definitely pleased with the way things played out. He went on to say that it was great to partner with the league and they’re really happy with how their customers reacted to it.

The NFL season is just a few weeks from being over and a decision on who will stream the games for next season is said to be coming soon. It’s rumored that the NFL will go the same route as it has done in recent years by having a streaming service and a broadcast. The previous season it was Twitter that had the opportunity to stream the games.

Amazon’s interest in sports content is nothing new as the online retailer has already brought the sports documentary series All or Nothing to its subscribers. In November, Manchester City and Amazon reached a deal for a TV series that will follow the club through the 2017-2018 season. Back in August, the online retailer acquired the ATP tour tennis rights.

Amazon is said to be among the companies interested in acquiring the EPL rights when the deal expires in 2019. The last auction in 2015 was won by Sky and BT, which paid a combined $6.9 billion. Facebook, which has also added sports content in recent years, and Netflix are also rumored to be among the companies considering a bid for the EPL rights. The EPL is one of the most popular soccer leagues around the world and it would be a major addition to any of these companies.
