A Czech snowboarder and skier, Ester Ledecka recently won the gold medal in alpine skiing at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Four years ago, she had also represented the Czech Republic at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Hailing from Prague, Czech Republic, the 22-year-old was born into a sporting family. Not only did her mother figure skate, but her grandfather was also a two-time Olympic medalist. Unsurprisingly, she took up skiing at a young age, when she was just four years old. Not long afterward, she also got into snowboarding.
How Ester Ledecka Became Famous
In 2013, Ledecka won two gold medals at the Junior World Championships; one for the Parallel Slalom event, and another for the Parallel Giant Slalom event.
Hailed as one of the most talented athletes in the Czech Republic, she eventually represented her country at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, where she made her Olympic debut. Despite her best efforts in the competition, however, she ultimately finished seventh overall.
Following that, she also started to compete in alpine skiing. In 2016, she made her debut at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, where she finished in 24th place. A year later, she became the first woman to compete in both snowboarding and skiing in the World Championships.
In the end, she took home a gold medal in the Parallel Giant Slalom and a silver in the Parallel Slalom.
Ester Ledecka’s Recent Activities
Currently, Ledecka is competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics, where she will be making her debut in alpine skiing. Unsurprisingly, she has also qualified to take part in the alpine snowboarding event.
As it happened, she eventually won the gold medal in the super-G discipline, after finishing just 0.01 seconds ahead of Anna Veith, the former gold medalist.
