A Russian figure skater, Adelina Sotnikova had won the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Prior to that, she had also medalled at the Winter Youth Olympics, European Championships, and World Junior Championships.
Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, she began skating at the age of four. By the time she was in her early teens, she had made her senior debut at the Russian Nationals. Later, she made her Junior Grand Prix debut during the 2010-11 season.
How Adelina Sotnikova Became Famous
In her native Russia, Adelina Sotnikova had always been considered an emerging talent. In 2009, she won her first gold medal at the Russian National Championships. From there, she competed as a junior at the Grand Prix Final series the following season, where she successfully won a gold medal in the UK and Austria. With that, she went on to win the Junior Grand Prix Final.
After winning her third national title in 2012, she went on to the 2012 Youth Olympic Games, where she finished in second place. At the subsequent World Junior Championships, she also won the silver medal.
Still, her most noteworthy performance was at that of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Representing Russia, she competed in the ladies’ singles event, where she beat reigning champion, Yuna Kim, for the gold medal.
Despite having won the gold medal, however, her victory in Sochi had sparked much controversy- with many believing that bias from the Russian judges worked in her favor.
Adelina Sotnikova’s Personal Life
The older of two siblings, she has a younger sister named Maria, who has Treacher Collins Syndrome. Despite this, she has cited her to be her most influential person; in fact, she sees figure skating as a career in order to support her sister.
