Fortnite’s Cross-Play Between Sony and Microsoft Consoles Won’t Be Happening

Fortnite is an extremely popular game and it is not even done growing yet as the game developers plan to bring it to smartphones. The battle royale game is one of the most popular Xbox One, PS4 and PC games out there but one feature that’s been heavily requested won’t probably ever happen.

The feature we’re talking about is cross-play, which will happen but not between the PS4 and Xbox One. Epic Games recently announced that there will be cross-play between the PS4, PC, Mac, iOS and Android. There is one big absence from the names listed, the Xbox One.

Cross-play between the PS4 and Xbox One can probably be done since it’s being done for everything else but that won’t be happening. Nick Chester, PR Manager at Epic Games, tweeted a few days ago that PS4 players can play with PC, Mac and mobile while Xbox One players can play with PC, Mac and mobile.

In September, Epic Games confirmed that there had been cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One. The cross-play led to some confusion as gamers weren’t sure that they were playing against people from other consoles. A spokesperson later confirmed that it happened, saying they had a configuration issue and that it had been corrected.

Xbox Head Phil Spencer was asked about the configuration issue shortly after news surfaced. He replied through a tweet that he would have liked to see them leave it on. Cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One has been a heavily requested feature in recent years, not just for Fortnite but other games as well.

Last year, Rocket League was announced for the Nintendo Switch and during the event, news about cross-play were also revealed. The cross-play announced was only for PC and consoles, except for the PS4. Jeremy Dunham, VP of Publishing at Psyonix, told Polygon that the honest answer was that PlayStation had not yet granted them permission.

Fortnite, which has millions of players across PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mac, will soon be on mobile. The super popular battle royale game will be coming to iOS first. Sign-ups for the iOS version actually began today and reports say there were so many people attempting to sign up that the site crashed briefly. The game developer has said that Android support will be coming in the next few months.
