A figure skater, Jayne Torvill had won the ice dancing event at the 1984 Winter Olympics with her partner, Christopher Dean. Prior to that, the pair had also finished third at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games.
Born and raised in Nottingham, England, she began skating at the age of eight, after being brought to the local rink for a school field trip. A few years into her skating career, she took up ice dance; initially, she skated with Michael Hutchinson. It wasn’t until 1975, that she paired up with Dean.
How Jayne Torvill Became Famous
The pair made themselves known after winning the ice dancing event at the 1981 European Championships. Later that same year, they won their first World Champion title in Hartford.
The following year, they successfully defended their European and World titles; in doing so, they had added two additional gold medals to their list of accomplishments. After another win in 1984, they qualified for their first Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo, where they brought home a gold medal for Great Britain.
Ten years afterward, they would go on to represent the country again for a second time at the 1994 Winter Games, where they’d win a bronze medal.
Jayne Torvill’s Other Activities
After taking a prolonged break from skating, it was announced that she and Dean would be starring in the show, Dancing on Ice. Premiered in 2006, the show is currently in its eighteenth season.
As far as other ventures go, Torvill and Dean were also named ambassadors for the 2012 European Championships, which were held in Sheffield, England.
Currently, Jayne Torvill lives in East Sussex, England, with her husband and children.
