A Canadian figure skater, Joannie Rochette had won a bronze medal in the women’s singles event at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. A six-time Canadian national champion, she had also medalled at the Grand Prix Final, Four Continents Championships, and World Championships.
Born and raised in Quebec, she took to the ice for the first time at the age of two, after her parents took her to the local rink. Little did she know at the time that she would one day represent her country at the Winter Olympics.

How Joannie Rochette Became Famous
In 2006, she made her Olympic debut in Turin, after winning her second national title at the Canadian Championships. In the end, she had narrowly missed the podium, having finished in fifth place.
Four years later, she was named to the Canadian Figure Skating team for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Prior to that, she had won her sixth consecutive national title.
Ultimately, it was during her practice for the games that she received tragic news- her mother had passed away shortly after arriving in Vancouver for the Olympics, due to a heart attack. Though many expected the skater to withdraw from the competition, she chose to compete in her honor.
After recording a new personal best in the SP, she finished third for a second time during the long program for a bronze medal. With that, she became the fifth Canadian skater to medal at the Winter Olympics.

Following her bronze-medal win at the 2010 Olympics, she was awarded Female Athlete of the year by The Canadian Press. Later on, it was revealed that she would not be taking part in the 2010 World Championships.
As of 2017, Rochette is studying medicine at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
