A Japanese figure skater, Yuzuru Hanyu most recently won the gold medal in the men’s singles event at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Prior to that, he had also won the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Regarded by many as one of the greatest skaters of all time, he is also a four-time Japanese national champion and a two-time World Champion.
Brought up in Sendai, Miyagi, Hanyu began skating at the age of four, after following his sister, Saya, to the rink. Inspired by his idol, Evgeni Plushenko, he eventually competed on the novice level for the first time in the 2004-05 season.

How Yuzuru Hanyu Became Famous
Despite his status in Japan, it wasn’t until he won the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, that he gained international attention. After a near-perfect skate, he won the gold medal in the men’s figure skating singles event; this was the first Olympic gold that Japan has ever won for figure skating. With that, he also became the only athlete form Japan to win a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
From there, he continued to take center stage, with multiple victories at the Grand Prix Final, World Team Trophy, and World Championships. Fast forward to earlier this month, and he had also successfully defended his Olympic title, with a second gold medal in the men’s singles event.
Yuzuru Hanyu’s Other Activities
One of the best recognized athletes in Japan, he has appeared in numerous television commercials in his native country. In fact, he even released a DVD/Blu-ray album in 2014 which went on to sell more than 20,000 copies.
A couple of years back, he even appeared on the big screen for the first time in the Japanese movie, The Magnificent Nine, in which he played the part of a samurai lord.
