Born and raised in the Philippines, Michael Christian Martinez has represented his country at many figure skating events. For instance, he had won a gold medal in the men’s singles at the 2015 Asian Trophy in Bangkok. In 2014, he also competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics as the sole representative from the Philippines.
Hailing from Paranaque, he began skating at a young age, though his mother was initially reluctant about him partaking in the sport due to his history of asthmatic bronchitis. Fortunately, his condition improved over time. By the time he was in his early teens, he had started competitive training as a figure skater.
How Michael Christian Martinez Became Famous
In 2012, Martinez competed at a Junior Grand Prix event in Lake Placid, where he successfully landed his first triple Axel jump. Not long afterward, he had won his first international title as a senior at the Crystal Skate of Romania event, making him the first Filipino skater to have ever achieved such a feat. With that, he had gained himself a decent amount of attention in the Philippines.
The following season, he participated in the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy, which also happened to be the last qualifying event for the 2014 Winter Olympics. After a seventh-place finish, he successfully earned himself a spot, making him the first Filipino figure skater to have ever qualified for the Winter Games. The flag bearer for the Philippines, he ultimately finished 19th overall.

Over the next few years, he took part in several competitions such as the ISU Championships and Four Continents Championships. In 2017, he was named the first alternate to the 2018 Winter Olympics after finishing eighth at the CS Nebelhorn Trophy. After Sweden’s spot was relinquished, he was allowed to compete in PyeongChang, where he finished in 28th place.
