A former figure skater, Oksana Baiul gained widespread attention for her gold-medal performance at the 1994 Winter Olympics Games. The first Ukranian athlete to achieve such a feat, she later returned professional in 1994 to tour across the U.S.
Born in Ukraine, she was brought up by her mother and maternal grandparents, who initially encouraged her to ice skate. Within just a few years, she had started to train under Stanislav Koritek, a well-known coach in the country, at the age of five.

How Did Oksana Baiul Became Famous?
While still in her mid-teens, she won a silver medal at the 1993 European Championships, an achievement that garnered her some degree of attention. Despite an injury to her back and neck, which she sustained during training, she eventually went on to win a world title in Prague by the end of the season.
The following year, she returned to the European Championships, where she won a silver medal for the second time. From there, she was chosen to represent Ukraine at the 1994 Winter Olympics- she was seventeen at the time. Though she experienced a collision during the practice session, she ultimately finished first place after defeating Nancy Kerrigan, who placed second.
Oksana Baiul’s Later Career
Following her Olympic win, she turned professional in order to tour across the U.S. Since then, she has performed in several productions including The Wizard of Oz on Ice and The Nutcracker on Ice. At one point, she even worked on a skating musical called, Cold as Ice.
As far as television appearances go, the skater has been featured in shows such as Celebrity Charades, Celebrity Poker Showdown, Master of Champions, The Apprentice and Pop Star on Ice, among others. Having said that, she hasn’t appeared on the small screen since 2010.
