Back in 2016, Nintendo announced that it would be releasing an NES Classic Edition with 30 original NES games. The idea proved to be very successful as the retro console flew off shelves.
Now, Sony is looking at the same idea but with its super successful PS1 console. The news come from the company itself, which confirmed that it has considered the idea. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera said in an interview this week that the company is looking at the possibility of releasing a retro console.
Discussions About It
The CEO said during the interview with Japan’s Mantan Web that there is nothing they can talk about at the moment but added that they are regularly digging up past assets and he thinks there are different ways of doing it. He also revealed that there have been discussions happening about how to make it work.
This doesn’t mean that Sony will actually release one but this is some good news for those who want to see a retro console from the company. Sony’s most recent consoles, the PS3 and PS4, have great games but there are always fans of the older games who want to see classics return.
Recent Returns of Classics
Not too long ago, we saw a remastered version of the Crash Bandicoot series, which got fans very excited. The remaster has been a commercial success for Activision, which will soon also be bringing back the Spyro the Dragon series.
That is great for those who are fans of the series but Sony’s PS1 retro console could be an even bigger success since not many PS1 games have been brought back. Sony does feature some PS2 classics for the PS4 but the company has not done the same with the PS1.
How Many Games? Which Ones?
The PS1 has lots of classics and it would be interesting to see how Sony makes this idea work since Nintendo only released its retro console with 30 original games. The CEO did mention that there have been discussions, so this makes it seem like this is still some time away from happening, if the company actually decides to do it.
