Texas: Ten Dead and Ten Injured In Santa Fe High School Shooting

Ten people have lost their lives and ten others are injured after a shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas. The state governor has confirmed that the shooter was a student of the high school.

17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, who was arrested, allegedly used a revolver and a shotgun that belongs to his father. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said that various kinds of explosives had been found at the location. The governor added that they included a Molotov cocktail and a CO2 device.

Police have confirmed that most of the people that lost their lives in the shooting are students. The suspect was arrested by authorities shortly after the shooting and Mr. Abbott said the teenager was planning to commit suicide but gave himself up because he didn’t have the courage to do it. One police official tweeted that one is in custody and that a second had been detained. That official added that the injured police officer was being treated and that the extent of his injuries were unknown.

The shooting has also left ten people injured, including a Santa Fe school police officer. Local media reported that officer John Barnes was in critical condition and that he is undergoing surgery. One police official said there were 1,400 students in the school at the time of the shooting.

Students say the attack began when the suspect entered an art class just minutes before 8:00 a.m. One witness told local media that there was someone that walked in with a shotgun and started firing. Another student told CBS News that she ran as fast as she could so she could hide and call her mom.

One student told KHOU-11 that a teacher who saw what was happening activated the fire alarm. Another student said people began running outside after hearing the alarms.

The shooting comes three months after a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida left 17 dead and 17 injured. The shooting at the Florida high school has led to campaigns across the country calling for gun control. Just a few days ago, a police officer stopped an attack from happening after shooting an armed former student. The Illinois police officer fired at the former student after he fired at him. The police chief said the suspect initially fired shots near the school gym, where he was confronted by the police officer. The incident ended when the police officer wounded the suspect.
