A man who is being accused of taking off from restaurants after dates is facing 13 years in prison. The alleged dine-and-dash dater has been accused of taking financial advantage of at least ten women.
The incidents happened between May 2016 and April 2018. Paul Gonzales met most of the women through dating apps and websites. Prosecutors say Gonzales defrauded the women of nearly $1,000. The man has pleaded not guilty to the grand theft, extortion and other charges.
The dates ended in losses for the women, who had to pay the bill after he left. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office said he would take women to restaurants around the area. He would then drink and eat before taking off. Eight of the ten women that went out on a date with Gonzales had to pay the bill. In two other cases, the restaurant decided not to charge the women, according to a statement from the district attorney’s office.
The women were left with high bills after the dates and Gonzales continued doing this for nearly two years. At least ten women are said to have been left in the restaurants by Gonzales.
Two women that went out on dates with Gonzales have spoken to CBS on the news that he is facing a prison sentence. One of them joked about the news, saying that Gonzales doesn’t have to worry about any meals now. She added that he is going to get three square meals a day. The other woman was happy to hear that he is facing a prison sentence. She added that she hopes he gets what he deserved.
Mr. Gonzales is facing a long sentence over the dine-and-dash but he is also being accused of leaving other services without paying. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office said he allegedly received services from a hair salon and took off without paying the bill. Authorities are saying this is a separate incident from the dates that he left.
Mr. Gonzales is being held on a $350,000 bail. He appeared in court on Monday and there will be a preliminary hearing on September 7.
