Indonesia: At Least 82 Killed By Earthquake In Lombok

At least 82 people are confirmed to have lost their lives during a powerful earthquake in the island of Lombok. Officials have also confirmed that hundreds were injured by the earthquake.

Pictures taken by residents and tourists show destruction all around the area. The earthquake has left many parts of the island without electricity. Hundreds of buildings have also been left with damage.

The powerful earthquake brought a tsunami warning but that was lifted hours later. It is the second earthquake to hit the island in a week. The first earthquake killed at least 16 people.

Lombok is an island known for its beaches and surfing spots. The island, which is a popular tourist destination, is located east of Bali. In Bali, videos showed people leaving their homes when the earthquake struck Lombok.

A spokesman for the country’s disaster agency told the AFP news agency that many structures were affected by the earthquake in Lombok. He explained that the buildings affected had been constructed with weak materials.

The earthquake left serious damage in the city of Mataram, which has a population of more than 400,000 people. The spokesman confirmed that many buildings had been affected in that city. Rescue teams are currently in the search for survivors.

The city was left without electricity after the earthquake. A hospital in that city was evacuated and patients were treated in the streets. Reports say another hospital in Bali was also evacuated. Reports say airports in Bali and Lombok continue to operate. Reports add that the airports only suffered minor damage.

The Gili Islands, a group of three small islands located near Lombok, also felt the powerful earthquake. The head of the Disaster Mitigation Agency said through a tweet that 1,000 tourists had been evacuated from there. Singapore’s Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam was in the island for a conference when the earthquake hit.

The minister made a post on Facebook explaining what happened at that moment. He said his hotel room shook violently and that it was impossible to stand up. He also posted several images of the destruction that the earthquake left in the area.

Model Chrissy Teigen, who is in Bali for a vacation, tweeted that there had been an aftershock. She added that it was the eighth one since the earthquake last night.
