Sony Recently Filed Patent For a Foldable Phone

Sony is not the hottest company in the smartphone business but all of the recent rumors and reports point to some big ideas for the near future. The tech world has been talking about foldable phones for quite a while, even though they have struggled to take off. The Galaxy Fold and Mate X have been delayed but several companies are rumored to be working on their own foldable phones.

Foldable Phone Patent

Now, LetsGoDigital is reporting that Sony is in the mix. The tech news blog spotted a patent filed by Sony. The patent was filed back in March, which means that it will probably be a while before Sony releases a foldable device.

The images show a foldable phone with sensors on the screen. The patent describes three sensors, with one of them being a pressure sensor. The same patent also mentions a dual screen phone, which could be a totally different idea from Sony.

Rumors and Reports On Sony’s Plans

The patent is not a sure confirmation that Sony will actually work on and release these devices in the near future. The tech giant has struggled in the smartphone business but this patent is one of the many things that point to the company making big moves for the future.

In recent months, there have also been other rumors about a Sony foldable device. Not too long ago, there was also a report that mentioned Sony’s plan on a rollable phone. This is the second time we hear about a rollable device in recent weeks, with the other being Samsung.

Are Rollable Phones the Future?

The info on Samsung’s rollable phone also came from LetsGoDigital, which reported on a patent that was filed back in November. The images don’t reveal much about the phone, except for a triple front camera and a mechanism that allows the phone to go from a regular sized screen to a much larger screen.

Samsung’s plans on a unique phone have ran into some problems early on after the delay of its Galaxy Fold. The foldable device does not have a release date at the moment and at least two companies have cancelled pre-orders. Huawei, one of three companies that have announced a foldable phone, has also made the decision to delay the Mate X to avoid any issues and make sure its 100 percent ready.

Sony Xperia 1R Leak

Speaking of Sony, a leak earlier today revealed that the company could be the very first to release a 5K smartphone. The device, which is known as the Xperia 1R, has not been confirmed but rumors say it could make an appearance at IFA 2019, which will kick off on September 6, 2019.

The leak comes just days after the launch of the Sony Xperia 1, which features 4K HDR OLED display. A lot of us still see 4K as a little too much for a smartphone but it appears that Sony is planning to take things to a whole new level with the rumored Xperia 1R.
