Bobby Edwards and his mother/business partner Judy Edwards are part of a health-conscious family. They wanted an inexpensive, natural way to treat and fix colon issues that had been bothering them. They realized that humans naturally defecate in a squatting position, rather than a sitting position, and wondered if there was a way for people to squat while still using the standard toilets found in American homes.

They invented the Squatty Potty, a stool that lifts people’s feet and knees in the air when they go to the bathroom. The stool sits on the floor in front of the toilet.

According to medical research posted on their Web site, the squatting position causes a person’s puborectalis muscle to relax, allowing for faster, more thorough elimination, and helping relieve problems such as hemorrhoids, bloating and constipation. Squatting is the position humans have used for thousands of years, and in many parts of the world where people don’t have indoor plumbing, they still squat outside.

Sitting on a toilet may be considered the modern, civilized way to “go,” but it could also be causing health problems.

The Sharks Swim ‘Round the Potty

Bobby and Judy appeared on the ninth episode of Shark Tank‘s sixth season. They sought $350,000 for a 5% share in their company, saying they needed to increase production.

But to get an investment, they had to explain what the Squatty Potty was, and how it worked. “Simply put,” Judy said, “we’re in the business to help you do your business.”

On the stage beside Bobby and Judy, a sheet covered part of the company’s display. Bobby pulled the sheet away, revealing a toilet and a Squatty Potty. Suddenly Robert Herjavec understood Judy’s wordplay. “Oh, that business,” he said.

Judy said that, with the help of a Shark, her company would become “the goose that laid the golden egg.”

The bathroom humor continued.

“But how do you squeeze out a profit?” Mark Cuban said. Kevin O’Leary was apprehensive at the valuation of $7,000,000. “That’s a whole lotta poo-poo!” Kevin said. Bobby replied they’d already sold several million dollars’ worth of the product, and all sales were done online. They hadn’t tried to crack the retail market yet.

Reacting to those impressive sales figures, Robert said, “Holy crap!”

Lori immediately knew the secret to their success. She remembered seeing the product featured on the Dr. Oz show. Bobby said that was true, and Dr. Oz himself had told his viewers that the product worked. Howard Stern had also extolled the Squatty Potty’s benefits on his show.

Getting down to the numbers, Bobby explained Squatty Pottys cost $4.50 to make and were sold for $25. Mark said, “With those margins, you gotta be pooping cash!” Bobby said sales could soar even more if they could get the FDA to approve the product as a medical device, which would allow insurance companies to reimburse customers. Bobby also said he wanted to get the product into retail stores.

The Sharks seemed hooked. “This is the first crappy investment I like,” Kevin said.

But ultimately, only one Shark made a deal. Robert didn’t invest because he thought it would be too difficult to change consumers’ bathroom habits and get them to use the product. Kevin wanted 10% of the company, which Bobby balked at. Mark didn’t like Bobby’s valuation of the company, so he went out. Barbara said she thought Bobby seemed untrustworthy–something about his body language made her uneasy.

Finally, Bobby and his mother/business partner Judy took Lori’s offer. She’d offered them $350,000 for 10% of the company, which was the same offer Kevin had made–but Lori had the advantage of her QVC connections.

“I know that this [product] helps a lot of people,” Lori said after hugging Bobby. “I know this really works.”

Squatty Potty Update In 2026 – How They’re Doing Now

Sales exploded after the episode aired- to the point where they completely sold out within four days. Within a few months, they had done more than $5 million in sales, which is a considerable increase, seeing as how they had previously done $6 million in three years.

They were eventually given an update segment in episode 625, where they revealed that they’ve since sold $12 million in products. Not only that but the product is also available in every Bed Bath Beyond store across the country.

The Squatty Potty is now available in all Bed Bath Beyond locations across the country

In January 2016, they were also featured on an episode of Beyond the Tank. In the follow-up, they revealed that marketing has been challenging due to the nature of the product. While Bobby and Judy were discussing the issue, Lori came in and reassured them, saying that she’s never seen such high numbers the first night of Shark Tank. She also suggested that they market the Squatty Potty with an infomercial as that may be the best way to educate the public.

Bob was hesitant as their first experience with infomercials had been disappointing; they had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars but had poor results, which led them to end the contract.

Lori reassured him that it will work this time as they now “have her on [their] side”. She also recommended that they work on the video themselves and to upload it on their website and social media, which they agreed to. The three then talked about potential ideas for the videos.

Fast forward a few years and the Squatty Potty has become one of the most successful products to have ever been featured on Shark Tank. In another update segment, which was included in season 11, they revealed that they’ve done more than $250 million in lifetime sales.

Later in 2021, it was announced that the Squatty Potty has been acquired by Aterian, a publicly traded consumer products company, for $31.1 million.

The Squatty Potty is highly rated on amazon, where it has a 4.5-star rating out of more than 47,000 reviews

As of 2026, the Squatty Potty is still available for sale. If anything, it’s just as popular as ever. Not only is it available through their website, but it can also be found at a number of retailers across the U.S., including Amazon, where the original model has a 4.7-star rating out of 47,000 reviews. They’ve also expanded their line of products to include kid stools, bamboo stools, flip stoops, and adjustable stools. They even have a Spongebob Squarepants stool!

Dennis Haskins will forever be associated with his signature role as Bayside High School’s principal, the benevolent Mr. Richard Belding. Right now, Saved By The Bell is probably being broadcast somewhere. More than twenty years after its original run, it lives forever in reruns. But that’s not all Dennis has done, and his career continues today.

Dennis Haskins is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he attended Notre Dame High School and became a star basketball player. His acting career started in college. He majored in theater at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Not only did he act in plays–he wrote them, too. He also got showbiz experience being entertainment chairman of the UTC Student Government Association, booking acts such as Ike and Tina Turner on campus.

Before Saved By The Bell, he had roles on The Dukes of Hazzard and Magnum, PI.

For More Than a Decade, He Was Mr. Belding

He first started portraying Mr. Belding in 1988 on the Disney Channel show Good Morning, Miss Bliss. It was a precursor to Saved By The Bell, and it featured some of the same characters, such as Zack, Screech, Lisa, and Mr. Belding. But it was set in Indiana, and it focused on the teachers’ lives as much as the students’ lives. Hayley Mills played Miss Bliss. NBC co-produced the show, which wasn’t exactly a hit.

Rather than cancel it completely, NBC moved the show to Saturday mornings on their network, renamed it and revamped it, changing the setting to Bayside, California. Zack became the main character, with Slater and Mr. Belding as antagonists.

Dennis had a good relationship with his teenage co-stars.

“I found out early on that they were all good actors,” he said in a recent interview with WUTC 88.1 FM. “I treated them as equals, personally. Sometimes I may have helped with stuff, but they were very good on their own.”

He said the relationship was friendly, a little bit like an uncle.

“We would go out every Friday night and hang out. I think that showed up on the screen with Mr. Belding and how he treated the students.”

Dennis wound up portraying Mr. Belding for more than a decade on four different shows: Good Morning, Miss Bliss, Saved By The Bell, Saved By The Bell: The College Years, and Saved By The Bell: The New Class. In the New Class shows, Dustin Diamond reprised his role as Screech, who had finished college early to work alongside Mr. Belding at Bayside High.

His signature phrase, “Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?” wasn’t originally planned. It came about because of something Don Barnhardt, the show’s director, used to do. When the actors were goofing off on the set, the director would say, “Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on!”

So when Dennis, as Mr. Belding, needed to get the attention of his students, he blurted out a version of the director’s own favorite phrase. Basically, Dennis was poking gentle fun at the director. Everyone on set cracked up.

“They laughed, and so it stayed,” he said.

His signature laugh is pretty much his own laugh, and it was funny enough to become a recurring part of the show.

“I have a high-pitched laugh,” he said. “So that’s how it happened, it was a wonderful accident.”

Though Saved By The Bell wrapped up in 1992, reruns of it are still broadcast today, winning over new generations of fans.

School’s Out: After Saved By The Bell

After the halls of Bayside High went dark, Dennis continued to act. He’s made guest appearances on TV shows such as It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Robot Chicken, and Mad Men. He also appeared in the Seth Macfarlane film A Million Ways to Die in the West, in which he played a snake oil salesman. He enjoyed working alongside big-name actors such as Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson.

“It was my first big budget, 100-million dollar film,” he said. “I was thrilled to be there. I would have paid to do that.”

He’s also had roles on How I Met Your Mother, where he played a judge, and on New Girl, where he played Santa Claus.

Dennis is a pro wrestling fan, and he got to be a guest commissioner for a Pro Wrestling Syndicate match in New Jersey.

In 2015, Dennis appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show for a Saved By The Bell reunion. He appeared alongside Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack), Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (Kelly), Mario Lopez (Slater), and Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie). Tonight Show producers even recreated the Bayside High hallway set.

‘Belding’s Blues’ is An Unusual Musical Collaboration

Dennis recently got a chance to show off his vocal prowess. Dennis is a talented singer and an avid karaoke fan (in 2009, he even released a CD, Karaoke With Your Favorite Principal Dennis Haskins) and in 2015, he teamed up with a famous friend who is known for producing oddball singles each year in honor of Record Store Day.

Shooter Jennings produced Belding’s Blues, a vinyl release for Record Store Day 2015.

Dennis Haskins and Shooter Jennings created Belding’s Blues.

“I’ve known Shooter for several years,” Dennis said. “He of course is Waylon Jennings’s son, but he’s a wonderful guy in his own right and a wonderful musician. He got the idea, with his manager, that maybe we could record a couple of songs, because he knew that I sing. He put together two songs. One is ‘Delilah’ by Tom Jones. The other is ‘For the Good Times’ by Kris Kristofferson. And Shooter found that the chord structure in the two songs fit together, so we mashed them together.”

The result is an eerie ballad about obsession, love gone wrong, and murder.

The single (and the flip side, a cover of “What A Wonderful World”) can be found on iTunes.

What is Dennis Haskins Doing Today – What’s He Up To Now in 2018?

Today, Dennis is enjoying a milestone he recently accomplished. In December of 2015, he finally graduated from college.

Although Dennis is known for portraying an iconic educator, the real Dennis never actually finished his education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He regretted that.

“I love this school so much that I wanted to have earned my degree,” he said.

He was sixteen credits short of graduating when he left school to purse his acting career. Finally, at the age of 65, he returned to UTC and finished his degree in theater, earning credit for his extensive professional experience in Hollywood.

Dennis Haskins graduated from UTC in 2015.

In December, he donned a blue cap and gown and a gold stole (the school colors are blue and gold), and he walked onstage alongside all the other graduates receiving diplomas.

It was a bittersweet moment.

“I wish my mom and dad were here,” he said. “My family’s not around, so that’s missing, but listen—I can be sad about little things, or happy about a big thing.”

He also donated a massive collection of Saved By The Bell memorabilia to the UTC library, including all his shooting scripts and one of his Mr. Belding suits.

“Well, they mean a lot to me,” he said of the items he chose to donate. “The suit is one I wore on many episodes, and I had several that they let me have after the show. The scripts are my personal scripts.”
