A member of the U.S. national gymnastics team, Gabby Douglas won a total of three gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Games. Coached by Christian Gallardo, she is the first African-American to win a gold medal in the all-around at the Olympics.
Born and raised in Virginia, she took up gymnastics at the age of six, after following her older system to the gym. Within just two years, she had won her first all-around gymnastics title at the 2004 State Championships. Little did she know at the time, however, that she would one day represent the country at the Olympic Games.
How Gabby Douglas Became Famous
Ultimately, it was at the 2012 Summer Olympics that she rose to fame as a member of the Fierce Five. Not only did she contribute to the team’s gold medal in the team event, but she later also won gold in the all-around. With this, she became the first gymnast of African-American descent to achieve such a feat.
Four years after her first Olympic Games, she returned to the international stage in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Though she didn’t manage to finish on the podium in the individual disciplines, she did win another gold medal in the team event.
Gabby Douglas’s Other Activities
Outside of gymnastics, Douglas has been involved with several other projects. For instance, she released an autobiography titled, Grace, Gold, and Glory: My Leap of Faith in late 2012, which went on to make The New York Times Bestseller List.
As far as television goes, she has also acted on a few occasions. For instance, she had roles in the series, Kickin It, The Vampire Diaries, and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, & Dawn. In 2016, she even had a reality show titled, Douglas Family Gold, which centered around her and her family’s life.
