IT Infrastructure Basics – IT Infrastructure Components

Every organization using information technology needs appropriate IT infrastructure. Find out what this means for your company.

If your organization plans to use information technology, you will need to invest in IT infrastructure. However, if you don’t have a strong background in IT, you may not know where to start.

Cedric Brown, an IT services expert in Charlotte provides a detailed explanation of IT infrastructure and its different components.

Defining IT Infrastructure

The term “IT infrastructure” refers to all of your organization’s hardware, software, facilities, networks and any other equipment used to provide IT services. It doesn’t include the personnel or documentation associated with IT.

Basic Components of IT Infrastructure

Some of the components of basic IT infrastructure include:

1. Network Server

A network server is a powerful computer that provides resources to multiple users. Different servers fulfill different purposes. For example, you may use database servers, web servers, directory servers or file servers, depending on your needs.

2. Network Switch

A network switch is a device with several ports that provide physical connections between all the devices on a Local Area Network.

3. Routers

Routers are devices that move data between different Local Area Networks. This allows devices to communicate with one another.

4. Physical Plant

Your network’s physical plant consists of all the cables used to connect different parts of your system. Different types of cabling exist for this purpose. The type of cabling you need will depend on the distance between devices, as well as speed requirements.

5. Firewalls

The purpose of a firewall is to protect your network from security threats. In their simplest form, firewalls establish rules for managing traffic. However, firewalls can also be much more complex if desired.

Setting Up IT Infrastructure

Having good quality IT infrastructure that functions properly is essential for every organization. For this reason, you need to make careful choices when setting up your IT infrastructure. If you don’t have in-house personnel who have been trained in this area, it is best to work with a reputable IT company when purchasing and setting up this important equipment. IT professionals will be able to help you choose the most appropriate equipment based on your organization’s needs and goals. The right IT professionals will also be able to help you make sure that everything has been installed properly and is working the way it should.

Once your IT infrastructure has been installed, it needs to be properly maintained and upgraded as needed. For the best results, continue to work with a trustworthy IT company that can maintain your infrastructure, keep your network secure and deal with any issues that may arise.
