A Japanese figure skater, Mao Asada won numerous titles throughout her career prior to retiring in 2017. Not only is she an Olympic medalist, but she has also won multiple gold medals at the World Championships, and Four Continents events. To this day, she is the only female skater to have ever successfully land three triple Axels in a single competition.
Hailing from Nagoya, Aichi, the skater initially studied classical ballet prior to switching to figure skating at the age of five. After competing as a junior for a few years, she made her national senior debut in the 2003-04 season.
How Mao Asada Became Famous
In 2008, the skater gained a significant amount of attention after winning a gold medal at the Four Continents Championships in Going. That same year, she also won gold at the Grand Prix Final and World Championships. Considered by many to have been one of the best figure skaters in the world, she was the fifth woman to have successfully landed a triple axel in competition.
In 2010, Asada represented Japan at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. With her triple axel, she eventually went on to earn a silver medal, with a total score of 205.50, beyond Yuna Kim. While she didn’t manage to take home the gold medal, she did set a world record for the most triple axels performed by a female figure skater in competition.
Mao Asada’s Later Activities
Following the Olympics, she continued to compete at various events including the Four Continents Championships, World Championships, and Grand Prix Final. Several years later, she announced her retirement in April 2017.
Since then, she has remained active in the showbiz, with a number of television appearances in her native Japan.
