A Canadian figure skater, Patrick Chan recently won a gold medal in the team event at the 2018 Winter Olympics. A former record holder, he is also a three-time World champion and a ten-time Canadian national champion. Following his last Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, he retired from the sport in February 2018.
Hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, he began skating at the age of five (though he also pursued other sports at the time). Despite his original intention to play hockey, he eventually became interested in figure skating. By the time he was eleven years old, he had begun to take part in competitions.
How Patrick Chan Became Famous
Ultimately, it was after he won the gold medal at the 2008 Canadian Championships that he started to garner widespread attention. That same season, he also finished first in the mens’ singles event at the Four Continents event.
Two years later, Chan represented Canada for the first time at the 2010 Winter Games, though he ultimately did not finish on the podium. With that said, he did have a few other accomplishments that year, such as the gold medals that he won at the Grand Prix Final and at the Canadian Championships.
One of the top figure skaters in Canada, he eventually went on to win ten gold medals at the Canadian Championships, the most recent of which was won in January 2018.
Patrick Chan’s Later Activities
In 2014, he was selected to represent Canada at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. After an impressive performance, he successfully won a silver medal in the singles’ event, and another silver in the team event.
Fast forward to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and he also successfully helped Team Canada to bring home a gold medal in the team event.
