Everyone knows about football, basketball and other popular sports. While those can have some unusual moments from time to time, there are entire sports that are very unusual themselves. Today, we’re taking a look at some of the most unusual and bizarre sports that exist today. It’s very possible that you’ve never even heard of these, not to mention played them. Without further ado, here is a list of top 10 bizarre sports.

10) Chess Boxing

Chess boxing is a very interesting combination of two sports – chess and boxing, as you could have guessed. This hybrid sport was invested by a Iepe Rubingh as an art performance, but it quickly became a competitive sport. As the title says, this sport is a combination of chess and boxing, meaning that the candidates fight in alternating rounds of the two sports. The first chess boxing competition took place in Germany in 2003, and the sport has been going strong ever since. Today there are entire chess boxing championships and professional matches are organized regularly. Chess boxing fights consists of 6 chess rounds and 5 boxing rounds. All of them are 3 minutes long with a 60 second break between them. There are six possible ways to win a chess boxing match; knockout, technical knockout, checkmate, exceeding the time limit in chess, disqualification, and finally, making your opponent give up.

9) Buzakashi (Goat Grabbing)

Buzakashi literally means “goat grabbing” in Persian, and it’s a greatly accurate name for the sport. Buzakashi definitely is one of the most bizarre sports that you can come across. The game is played by people who mount their horses and attempt to place a goat carcass in a goal. Apparently the matches get pretty heated so it’s advisable to wear thick clothing and head protection. You know, in case someone accidentally whips you, which is a real possibility in this sport. The games usually last a couple of days, but can also be time limited if a tournament is being played. Currently the best player of Buzakashi is Afghanistan’s Aziz Ahmad, who is sponsored by wealthy people of his country.

8) Kaninhop (Rabbit Show Jumping)

Probably the cutest sport you’ll come across is kaninhop, or rabbit show jumping in English. The whole thing is similar to horse show jumping. You know how horses are trained to jump over fences? Well this is exactly that, but for rabbits. Kaninhop first started in Sweden during the 70s, and has been on the scene ever since. Other than Sweden, the sport is also popular in Germany, Norway, Finland and Denmark. During some kaninhop competitions, several world records were set, such as the highest rabbit jump, which currently belongs to “Super Champion Majesty of Night Aysel”. His Majesty managed to jump exactly 1 meter high.

7) Toe Wrestling

Toe wrestling is exactly what it sounds like. Similar to its brother, thumb wrestling, this game is played by two players who attempt to pin each-others toes. It may sound like some sort of a hoax, but there are legitimate toe wrestling championships. The sport first came to surface in 1974. It was invented by four people sitting in a pub in Wetton, who were complaining how the United Kingdom doesn’t have any world champions. They decided to create a new sport so that they could finally have a world champion. For the first two years, one of the organizers was the world champion, but he was later overthrown by a Canadian tourist. The current world champion is Alan “Nasty” Nash.

6) Wife Carrying

Another widely popular bizarre sport is wife carrying. The creators of these weird sports are all great at naming because so far every name describes the sport spot-on. And wife carrying is no different. The premise is simple. Male competitors must carry a female teammate over an obstacle track. The first duo that makes it are the winners. There are several tactics used by the competitors, such as the piggyback, fireman’s carry or the Estonian-style carrying (pictured above). This sport is popular in Australia, USA, Hong Kong, Estonia and the UK. Wife carrying has some pretty interesting rules due to its unique nature. For example, the wife has to weight at least 49 kg, otherwise she is given a rucksack so that the total weight is 49 kg.

5) Belly Flopping

Have you ever experienced a belly flop? You know, jumping into the water and you land torso first. It can seriously hurt, or even injure you. However, that didn’t stop the people of Norway into turning the whole thing into a competition. Meet belly flopping, or “Dødsing”, in which the only objective is to make a stylish belly flop dive. However, the name is a bit misleading, because in order to prevent injuries, the contestants will curl their bodies a split second before they land. Contestants do various maneuvers, such as walking motions, in order to score points. And look very cool while doing it.

4) Cheese Rolling

The full name of this annual competition is Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake. This bizarre sport is very simple. A roll of cheese is rolled from the top of the hill, and competitors begin chasing it. The first one to cross the finish line at the bottom is the winner. The award? The roll of cheese, of course. Technically the idea is to chase the cheese, but that is pretty much impossible because it can reach the speed of around 70mph (112km/h). Thanks to the nature of the sport, injuries are frequent, as one can imagine.

3) Mountain Unicycling

Our number 3 bizarre sport is mountain biking, but done only on a single wheel. As you can imagine, the sport is pretty extreme, dangerous and takes a lot of skill. However, that doesn’t stop many people from practicing mountain unicycling. There are several events worldwide related to this sport, such as the British Muni Weekend and the California Mountain Unicycle Weekend. Obviously, the unicycles used are specifically design to withstand the conditions of this sport.

2) Quidditch

Remember Harry Potter? Harry was, among other things, a quidditch player. In the universe, quidditch is a sport played while flying on broomsticks. That’s not really possible in real life, but the International Quidditch Association managed to get around it, and make quidditch possible. The rules were adapted for people who aren’t wizards (aka muggles), and the sport first appeared in 2005. Each team has three chasers, two beaters and a single keeper. The goal is to score the most points by throwing a ball through one of the opponent’s hoops or catching the snitch. You surely know the Harry Potter quidditch rules, no need to go in-depth. The sport is great fun and is getting more and more popular each year.

1) Shin Kicking

Shin-kicking, also known as hacking and purring, is a simple sport. It involves two people who kick one another on the shin as hard as they can. Of course, they first stuff their trousers with protective armor, such as…straws. They repeat that until one of them falls down. As you can see, it’s a simple sport for simple people. Shink kicking is mostly popular in the United Kingdom, but there are several players from all over the world.

In today’s society, there is a need for many kinds of jobs. From retail store workers, doctors, police officers to bankers, everyone plays a certain role to help their communities and earn their wages. And most jobs that you come across each day are the common ones. Some of them are pretty dull even. But today, we are focusing on the exact opposite of those.

We’re taking a look at some of the most unusual, bizarre and weird jobs that people actually do in order to make a living. If you are getting bored from the regular stuff, this just may be for you. Let’s check out the top 10 absurd jobs in the world.

10) Train Passenger Pusher

A railway station attendant is a less cool sounding name compared to train passenger pusher, so we’re sticking with that. A pusher is a basically someone who pushes (duh) people onto a train during rush hours. In Japan, where they were first introduced, they are known as oshiya. Since then, pushers can be found in various railway stations that are crowded during the rush hours. Pushers are there to make sure that people get onto the correct trains and make sure that everyone fits on the train. They are also known as “sardine packers”, and are not very liked by the commuters.

9) Professional Ear Cleaner

In several countries, including China and India, there are people who will happily remove people’s earwax on the street for a living. These people are real professionals when it comes to their jobs, having an array of tools and techniques they use to make sure that your ear canals are perfectly clean after the treatment. It may sound scary, but the ear cleaning is one of the tourist attractions that are actually quite popular. A 30-minute session will cost you a couple of dollars at most, so if you’re intrigued, you know where to go.

8) Bicycle Fisher

Amsterdam is a city known for its bicycling activities. It’s actually the most bicycle-friendly city in the entire world, and is considered to be the world center of cycling activities. And with hundreds of thousands of bikes, some end up in Amsterdam’s canals. Well, apparently it’s more than just some, because there are people who specialize in using mechanical cranes to take out all the bicycles from the canals. You wouldn’t believe it, but these people are actually quite busy fishing bikes. It’s estimated that around 15,000 bikes are taken out of the canals during an average year.

7) Iceberg Mover

This position was established after the famous Titanic tragedy in 1911. Specialist contractors are hired to move icebergs from the boat travelling paths and oil rigs. It’s a really complex jobs position, as you can imagine, but wouldn’t it be cool to move icebergs for a living?

6) Line Waiter

If you’re a busy fellow or just someone who doesn’t like waiting, you can rent yourself a person who will hold your place in a line. For a couple of dollars per hour, someone will stand in the line to your bank, store or any other destination. It’s actually pretty smart for people to have come up with such an idea for a job. On one side, you have busy people who can’t be bothered to waste hours waiting, so they will happily pay someone to do it. And on the other, people whose schedule isn’t as busy can do a simple job and get paid. Smart, and surely a bit unusual.

5) Pet Food Taster

If you’ve ever wondered why your Fido never complains about its food, here’s your reason. There is a person whose only job is to test out cat and dog food. A pet food taster must smell and taste the food in order to make sure that the quality is up to company’s standards. An interesting fact about this position is that it’s pretty easy to get promoted. Once promoted, the taster is also responsible for coming up with new recipes and deal with the regulatory matters. Most pet food tasters have a Master’s degree, so you should start working towards that if you’re interested in becoming a taster one day.

4) Gumologist

Simply put, a gumologist is a person who gets paid to chew gum. Sounds pretty good? Well, it’s not that simple. The gumologist must have a great understanding of flavors and all the terminology and measurement scales. To provide that, a six month training is put in place. After the gumologist has proven that they are able to do what it takes, then they start chewing and tasting gum. Similar to pet food tasters, they must judge if the flavor works and will be liked by the customers.

3) Snake Milker

Some snakes are poisonous, everyone knows that. In order to counter that, the snake milker position was created. Snake milker’s job is to extract venom from snakes, which is done by one of two methods. The first one is simply holding the snake and having it bite a latex membrane. Once the snake bites it, the venom comes out and is collected for future use. The other method is similar, but instead of having the snake bite something, its muscles are stimulated by electrodes, causing the snake to spew venom. The venom is used for several purposes, the most common one being making an anti-venom for all victims to use.

2) Panda Handler

There are actually people paid to dress up as pandas and play with (real) pandas. This adorable job will require you to know a thing or two about pandas, and also dedicate a large part of your time to them. Panda handlers must make sure that panda cubs are healthy, fed and safe, in order to preserve their species. Along with the job, panda handlers also get accommodation, free meals, a car and make a bit over $30,000, a year. Dream job?

1) Chicken Sexer

This unfortunately-named job deals with determining the sex (as in gender) of a chicken. A chicken sexer does their job at commercial hatcheries, where different ‘types’ of chickens are separated from one another. There are several methods that sexers use to do their jobs. Tragically, in some types of hatcheries (such as egg farms), unwanted sexes of chickens are killed upon determining that they are not needed at that hatchery.

Wars are usually fought over territories, glory, honor and similar motives. Most wars have complex and large-scale causes that have made them happen. But sometimes, there are exceptions. There are wars fought over some insignificant and trivial reasons. And today, those are our topic.

Together, we’ll learn about 10 of world’s most bizarre, interesting and pointless wars that have ever been fought. Without further ado, let’s get into them. Here are the top 10 most interesting wars, ranked in no particular order.

10) Anglo-Zanzibar War

We are opening the list with a war that is actually a record holder. The Anglo-Zanzibar War was a conflict between the UK and Zanzibar in 1896, and is the shortest war in history. While most wars go on for months or years, the Anglo-Zanzibar war was the exact opposite of that. It lasted for roughly 40 minutes. Zanzibar’s army suffered roughly 500 casualties, and the attacker only had a single person injured. The British won the war in a quick manner by disabling their opponent’s defenses by bombarding them and quickly sinking their boats. The field battle that came after that wasn’t much of a challenge, and the British have won the war after 40 minutes.

9) War of Jenkins’ Ear

As you can guess by the unusual name, this war is listed here for having a very specific cause – a human ear. That’s right, a war started because of captain Robert Jenkins losing his ear in 1731. The war didn’t start until eight years later, but the first glimpse of conflict was caused by the separation of Jenkins’ ear. Britain suffered around four times the damage and loss compared to their Spanish opponents.

8) Pig War

Another war caused by a very bizarre reason. A pig was shot in 1859 which caused the United States and Great Britain to start a war. Why was the pig shot? Well, it was trespassing on Lyman Cutlar’s private property, and he decided to end it right then and there. After some back and forth between him and the pig’s owner, the British threatened to arrest Cutlar. America then responded by sending soldiers to protect Cutlar, thus adding fuel to the fire. Long story short, not a single bullet was fired and no people were injured, although the war lasted for several days. Both sides have been given the same orders; not to shoot first. Soldiers listened to their commands and thus the only victim of the entire event was the pig.

7) Transnistria War

A local war in Transnistria that happened between in 1992 is also known as the “Drunken War”, due to its bizarre nature. The soldiers were fighting during the day, but when the night approached they put down their weapons and went for a drink...with one another. The same people who killed each other on the battlefield during the day drank together regularly during the nights. As friendly as that may sound, the war wasn’t victim-less. Couple hundred people were killed and many more were injured during the 4 months long battle.

6) Great War in Paraguay

Paraguayan Great War was the deadliest war in entire Latin America’s history, with around 400,000 estimated deaths during the 6 year-long war. During one of history’s worst military movements, Francisco Solano Lopez declared a war on Brazil. Unlucky for him and his nation, Brazil was in an alliance with Columbia and Urugay, two neighbor nations. The war was absolutely devastating for Paraguay’s population – around 70% of the male population died in the battles. The weird thing that the cause of war was Lopez’s belief that regional balance of power was threatened, and he decided to address that issue by attacking three of his way more powerful neighbors.

5) Second Italo-Ethiopian War

Italy vs Ethiopia had a face off in 1935/1936, and it is one of the most one-sided wars that ever happened. Italian army was consisted of over a million soldiers, armed with several thousand machine guns, few hundred tanks, modern assault weaponry as well as motorized transportation vehicles. On the other hand, 500,000 Ethiopians were armed with century old rifles, some even with spears and bows. They used horse-drawn carts as their transportation vehicles. While Italians had several hundred tanks and aircraft, Ethiopians had precisely 4 tanks, 7 armored cars and 13 aircrafts. Obviously, they suffered a major defeat.

4) The War of the Stray Dog

A crisis between Greece and Bulgaria that happened in 1925 is sometimes known as The War of the Stray Dog, due to its origins theory. There are two of those, and one of them is much more interesting than the other. A Greek soldier’s dog ran over the border and a soldier ran after it, attempting to catch the dog. When the Bulgarian border guards noticed what was going on, they shot the solider, and thus sparked the conflict. A total o 121 Greek soldiers were killed in the war, while Bulgarians suffered 50 victims, most of which were civilians.

3) Great Emu War

An unusual war took place in 1932. During the November and December 1932, Australians battled…emus. That’s not a typo, we are referring to the animal. Several thousand emus arrived on Australian farming lands, ruining the corps and destroying the field fences. After several failed ambushes, guns that jammed and natural inconveniences (bad weather), the Australians killed only several hundred emus and fired around 2500 rounds of machine gun ammunition. The army withdrew shortly after, and the emus “attacked” again. Yet again, the army intervened and managed to kill 986 emus with 9860 rounds, giving it a rate of exactly 10 rounds per kill. During the following decades, farmers called for aid several times more, but were denied. A bounty system was put in place and was proven very efficient. However, technically the war vs emus was lost.

2) 355 Year War

The longest war in history lasted for 355 years. During the three century war, millions of people were killed and captured…just kidding! The war between Netherlands and Sicily lasted for 355 years and didn’t have a single casualty, mainly because the war didn’t really happen. The war started in 1651 and lasted until 1986. Long story short, the war was declared due to political reasons, but nothing ever happened, and it was forgotten for centuries, until peace was officially declared in 1986.

1) Falkland War

Falkland War is one of the most bizarre wars because of what it was fought over. Two huge countries, Great Britain and Argentina battled over two South Atlantic Islands, both very small and without great importance. British defended the islands only because they didn’t want to give up their influence across seas. The 2-months long war however did have both impact in both countries and is the subject of many books, films and songs.

With millions of animal species (that we know of), there have to be some very quirky names among them. Sometimes scientist just run out of ideas and decide to give a bizarre name to a species. Nothing wrong with that, right?

Today, we’re taking a look at animals with weird names. Without further delay, here is our top 10 list of animal species with unusual names.

10) Satanic Leaf-Tail Gecko

Uroplatus phantasticus sounds quite boring, doesn’t it? That’s why the most common name for this gecko is Satanic leaf-tail gecko. How hardcore is that? This quite literally named gecko lives in Madagascar and was first discovered in 1888. Satanic leaf-tail gecko is a nocturnal reptile, feeding on insects and expertly avoiding predators. For example, they can shed their tails to fool their predators or reduce their own shadow to stay unnoticed. Pretty much everything regarding the little guy is pretty epic, starting from the name, over their looks, all the way to their behavior.

9) Wunderus Photogenicus

No, wunderus photogenicus isn’t a Harry Potter spell that will make you look good in pictures, it’s actually a species of octopus. It can be found in waters near Philippines and Vanuatu, and can be recognized by its white spots and lines. All the spots are individual, so it’s actually possible to track a certain wunderus photogenicus (wonderous octopus) individually. Pretty cool.

8) Blobfish

Blobfish is possibly the most literal name in all of animal world. Without even looking at the picture, you can imagine what a blobfish looks like, and you wouldn’t be far off. It’s a fish that looks like a blob. Blobfish can be found in deep ocean depths, and because of that their body is mostly made out of gelatinous mass that is slightly less dense than water, enabling them to easily float around. The blobfish looks like a regular fish while in the water, but thanks to its flesh, the second you take it out of the water, it turns into a blob-like pile of flesh. The species won the “World’s Ugliest Animal” award in 2013.

7) Tasselled Wobbegong

After you’re done laughing at its name, we can proceed learning something about the tasselled wobbegong species of carpet sharks. This species can be found in Australia’s and neighbor waters. It’s quite an aggressive species actually, biting humans out of the blue and luring fishes into its traps. Today, the tasselled wobbegong is nearing a threatened species status due to fisheries and habitat degradation.

6) Chicken Turtle

The chicken turtle is a regular-looking turtle found in the southeast of the USA. Since it doesn’t resemble a chicken at all, you might ask where did its name come from? Well, while the turtle does look like a regular turtle, its flesh tastes like chicken. People regularly hunt for the turtle for its tasty meat, but so far their numbers are stable and they are far from being endangered.

5) Mustached Puffbird

This uncommon species of puffbirds got its named by its fabulous “mustache” in the most literal way imaginable. If you’re interested in seeing the mustached puffbird, you may have a problem finding them, as they are extremely rare. If you still decide to go ahead, set sail towards Colombia and Venezuela and look high up, you just may be able to spot the wonderful mustache of this small bird.

4) Pink Fairy Armadillo

Other than being the smallest species of armadillo, the chlamyphorus truncatus has another interesting fact about it – it’s known as pink fairy armadillo. The armadillo is found in Argentina during night-time. Unfortunately, the number of pink fairy armadillos is steadily decreasing thanks to predators such as dogs and cats, as well as farming activities done by people. This cute little armadillo was discovered in 1825, and we hope it stays with us for many more years, so that everyone can witness its cuteness.

3) Fried Egg Jellyfish

This very large jellyfish species looks very much like a fried egg, wouldn’t you agree? Some scientist sure do agree with it because the jellyfish is known as egg-yolk jellyfish or fried egg jellyfish. Their tentacles can be up to 20 ft long, but their stings are pretty weak. Thanks to that, lots of small crustaceans often ride on jellyfish’s belly or even steal the food from its tentacles.

2) Leafy Seadragon

Fish that looks like a dragon? Check. Also resembles a leaf? Check. Lives in the sea? Check. And just like that, the name leafy seadragon came to existence. This fish can be found along Australian coasts and is pretty well-known around those parts. The leafy seadragon usually grows to around 9 inches and feed on plankton. They use their “leaves” to camouflage themselves as seaweed, even changing their color for the complete camouflage.

1) Goblin Shark

Probably the best known species of animals from today’s list is the goblin shark. Goblin sharks are rare species of sharks that can be found in deep seas. The sharks come from a 125 million years old lineage, so they’re also known as living fossils. The species survived this long thanks to the extreme depths that they live in, where they can’t really be captured. Their name obviously comes from their resemblance of mythical creatures known as goblins.

The post Top 10 Unusually Named Animals appeared first on Gazette Review.

Recorded history spans for several thousand years. In such a massive time, lots and lots of things happened – wars, diseases, technological advancements, inventions andmore. Some weird or bizarre events and situations were also bound to happen. Today, we’ll be taking a look at those.

Without further ado, here are some of history’s most bizarre stories!

10) The Kamikaze Typhoons

Kublai Khan was one of the most fearsome Mongol leaders. He conquered, plundered and expanded Mongolian influence over many countries. But even Kublai Khan’s mighty army couldn’t defeat a typhoon. In 1274, he attacked Japan and successfully conquered several settlements located on the islands. As his army proceeded further, they clashed with an army of samurai warriors that stopped them from getting any further. Kublai Khan ordered a withdrawal in order to resupply and reorganize his forces. In the midst of the withdrawal, his army was hit by a huge typhoon that killed many of his soldiers and drowned the fleet. Seven years later, Kublai struck again. Japanese built shore walls in the meanwhile, and the Mongols couldn’t find a good landing spot. They spent months on the sea until another typhoon destroyed the entire fleet.

That was the last time Mongols attacked Japan.

9) Halley’s Comet and Mark Twain

Mark Twain is one of the best known American novelists, who was born in November 1835. During his birth, Halley’s Comet was passing the Earth. In case you don’t know, Halley’s Comet passes by our planet every 76 years. Neat coincidence, but nothing unusual, right? Thousands of people have been born during that time. That’s indeed true, but how many were born and died while the comet was in the Earth’s orbit? That’s right, Mark Twain died 76 years later, in April 1910 just as the comet came back after 76 years. Not only that, but Twain actually predicted that he will die when the comet is back. He said that he believes God himself stated that the two freaks (Twain and the comet) came together, and that they will go together.

Next sighting of Halley’s Comet is predicted to be on July 28, 2061.

8) Lewis And Clark Reunite Siblings

Lewis and Clark Expedition was the first expedition to cross the west of the United States, starting from St. Louis and ending up at the Pacific coast. During that time, many amazing things happened, and one of them is related to Sacajawea. Sacajawea was a woman who traveled with the expedition and served as an interpreter due to cultural and linguistic differences. At one occasion, Lewis and Clark attempted to trade horses with a local tribe. During her interpretations, Sacajawea realized that the tribe’s chief was her own long lost brother. Talk about coincidence.

Sacajawea today is a symbol of women’s independence and worth. In 2001, Bill Clinton granted her the title “Honorary Sergeant” of the army.

7) Thomas Jefferson and John Adams

Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence, and one of American Founding Fathers. He died on July 4th, 1826, the same date that the Declaration was ratified, only 50 years later. Yes, Jefferson died on the 50th anniversary of American Independence. But the bizarre story doesn’t end there. The second American president, John Adams was born in October 30, 1735 and he died… on July 4th, 1826, same day as Jefferson. So long story short, the author of the Declaration of Independence and the second American President died on the same day, on the 50th anniversary of the signing.

Other famous people who died on this date are Bob Ross, Marie Curie and Barry White.

6) Story of Wilmer McLean

Wilmer McLean was a simple grocery seller from Virginia, and the hero of a bizarre story related to the Civil War. The first field battle of the war started in 1861 at his farm in Virginia. McLean was 47 at the time, and was too old to go participate in the war. He decided to move about 120 miles south to Appomattox County. 4 years later, General Lee surrendered to General Grant and ended the Civil War… in Wilmer McLean’s home in Appomattox County.

Wilmer McLean pretty much started and ended the American Civil War, at least location-wise.

5) Failed Assassination of Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson was the first American president that had an assassination attempt on his life. In 1835, a house painter, Richard Lawrence attempted to kill the President. As Jackson was leaving a funeral, Lawrence approached and shot at him with a gun. The gun misfired, and Jackson immediately attacked the attacker with his cane. During their fight, Lawrence managed to pull out another gun and killed the president… just kidding! The second gun failed to shoot as well. By that time guards pulled the unsuccessful assassin away.

A century later, a research was made on the guns that Lawrence used, during which they both shot properly the first time.

4) Nebraska Church Explosion

In 1950, a church in Nebraska exploded, 5 minutes after choir practice was supposed to begin. The practice was supposed to start at 7:20 PM, and the church exploded at 7:25 PM. 15 people were supposed to be at the church at that time, but no one was injured or died. How? Well, all 15 of them were late for practice. Two women were later due to car trouble, the minister and his wife were later because a dress was being ironed, a man was napping and overslept. The other also had different reasons, but the point is that all of them were late just enough to avoid certain death.

The chances of that happening can’t be precisely calculated, but have been estimated at around one in a million.

3) Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, and the first heir to the throne. He was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, and that assassination is commonly marked as the reason for the second World War. But, the story of the assassination is an unusual one. The Archduke and his wife were in Sarajevo, traveling in a motorcade, when an assassin threw a bomb under their car. The bomb exploded late, after the car passed it, and neither Ferdinand or his wife were injured . After that, the Archduke went on with his business. Several hours later, Gavrilo Princip, one of the assassins, went to a restaurant to have a snack. As he was eating, he noticed the Archduke’s driver take a wrong turn and attempts to reverse. The car stalled, giving Princip enough time to go out and shoot both the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophia.

Princip died 10 months after the assassination in his prison cell. Due to his malnutrition and disease, he weighted just 88 lb when he died.

2) November 9th, Germany

The above date is one of the most significant ones in German history. November 9th is called Schicksalstag in Germany, which translates to fateful day. Five significant events happened on that date, first one being the execution of Robert Blum in 1848. Second one happened in 1918, when Monarchy officially ceased to exist. Six years later, on November 9th, Hitler failed to overthrow German government. In 1938, large scale antisemitic movements started, during which hundreds of Jews died. And finally, in 1989, the fall of Berlin Wall happened in November.

November 9th also marks the day of two separate attacks in Jordan. First one happened in 2005, and the second one 10 years later.

1) Tsutomu Yamaguchi

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was a Japanese man who survived both atomic explosions during the World War II. Yamaguchi was born and lived in Nagasaki. Days before the Hiroshima bombing, he had a business trip scheduled. He went to Hiroshima and survived the nuclear blast with slight wounds. A day later, he returned to Nagasaki, and went to work. During the work hours, Nagasaki bombing happened, and Yamaguchi survived that one as well.

Mr. Yamaguchi, unkillable by nuclear detonations, died at 93 years old from stomach cancer.

2We’re taking a look at some of the oddest and most unusual medical syndromes currently known. While most medical syndromes are dull and boring, these conditions are very rare and straight up weird! So without further delay, let’s check what are the top 10 weirdest medical syndromes.

10) Fish Smell

Known in medicine as trimethlylaminuria, this syndrome causes people to give off an odor that is reported to smell like fish. Why does it happen you ask? The disorder prevents the body from breaking down trimethylamine, which is basically a chemical compound that doesn’t smell really good. As trimethylamine builds up in the body, afflicted people start to give off an unpleasant odor in their urine, breath and sweat. The smell has also been compared to rotten eggs and garbage.

9) Foreign Accent Syndrome

This rare medical syndrome afflicts people who have had strokes, various head traumas or migraines. Simply put, the patient’s brain develops a speech pattern that is perceived as an accent different from their usual/natural one. After this condition afflicts someone, they will start speaking in a foreign accent that they may or may not have ever heard in their lives. It’s a popular myth that people will start speaking an entire new languages after they are exposed to this condition, but there are no confirmed cases that prove that. This syndrome is very rare, with only 62 recorded case between 1941 and 2009.

8) Exploding Head Syndrome

EHS is a condition in which the patient hears loud noises in their heard, such as explosions and gunshots. These sounds are obviously imaginary, but can leave serious consequences on the afflicted people. For example, it is common for EHS patients to be unable to fall asleep or have anxiety caused by the syndrome. Unfortunately, not much is known about the condition, except that it’s not as rare as previously thought. Not only that, but there is no proven way to cure the Exploding Head Syndrome yet, although in some cases, doctors managed to reduce the amount of EHS episodes that the patients experience.

7) Becoming A Gourmand

Gourmand syndrome is a rare condition that affects people who injure their right frontal lobe. It is extremely uncommon for it to appear, but several cases have been reported. The syndrome will cause the afflicted to develop a passion towards gourmet food. The people with the syndrome reported that they started thinking, talking, and writing about gourmet food much more than pre-injury. The most famous case of this condition is a Swiss stroke patient who quit his job after he was released from the hospital and became a food critic.

6) Not Being Able To Move Your Face

Another extremely rare condition is the Moebius syndrome, best known for causing facial paralysis. The people afflicted with the syndrome are unable to move their facial muscles as well astheir eyes from side to side. Sometimes abnormalities in other body parts appear as an effect of the syndrome. While it changes the physical abilities of the patient, it doesn’t affect their intelligence in any way. The treatment for this syndrome isn’t straightforward. Patients go through various procedures in order to make their lives easier, but a complete cure isn’t known at this time. Luckily, the syndrome is very rare with only several cases per million births.

5) Having An ‘Alien’ Hand

Alien hand syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary hand movement. Basically, the person that has AHS doesn’t even notice that their hand is moving, and sometimes they don’t even have control over the action. AHS is most common with people who had the two brain hemispheres surgically separated, but also appears after a brain surgery, stroke, tumor or as a result of other diseases. Multiple patients stated that they feel as if their hand has a will of its own. The cure for the syndrome isn’t known, but there are treatments that ease the symptoms. For example, slapping the hand or holding an object in it usually prevents it from acting on its own. This disorder is very rare.

4) Not Feeling Pain

Congenital insensitivity to pain is one of the rarest medical conditions. People with CIP, simply put, don’t feel physical pain. While that may sound good in theory, it is extremely dangerous in practice. Except not feeling pain, patients are otherwise perfectly ‘normal’ and able to feel other sensations, such as a touch. The disorder is extremely rare, and there have recently been breakthroughs in CIPS treatment. A woman afflicted by it was able to experience pain for the first time in her life after being given nalaxone, so further researches are being conducted regarding it.

3) Immunity To Sensations

Related to the previous entry, there is an ‘addition’ to CIP, called hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV, that pretty much makes it impossible for people to feel sensations such as heat or cold. Any other nerve-related sensation, for example the urge to urinate, isn’t felt by the people with this disorder. People with this syndrome can pretty much go out naked during the harshest winter and they won’t feel a thing. However, similar to CIP, people who experience sensations immunity can still harm themselves easily, they just won’t notice it, which can be very dangerous.

2) Long Term Hiccups

While the hiccups that you have from time to time are pretty much harmless, there are some cases of hiccups that last for months or even years without stopping. Obviously, constantly having hiccups for longer periods of time affects your life in many ways. For example, an English man had hiccups for 3 continuous years, and lost his job thanks to it (he was a vocalist). Not only that, but he had trouble sleeping and would occasionally pass out from the hiccups. The cause of his long-term hiccups was a brain tumor, but there can be other causes as well. The longest recorded case of hiccups is 68 (!) years, held by Charles Osborn. It’s estimated that Mr. Osborne hiccuped roughly 430 million times during his life.

1) Pulling Your Own Hair Out

Professionally known as trichotilomania, this disorder gives person the urge to pull hair out from various parts of their body, most commonly their head. The urges to pull the hair out is incredibly strong in some cases, and frequently leaves patients with bald spots on their heads where the hair has been ripped out. However, for some people the disorder is manageable and doesn’t interfere with their everyday lives too much. The disorder is caused by anxiety, OCD and depression in most cases.

Honorable Mentions

Hypertrichosis, also known as human werewolf syndrome leaves patients with long hair all over their body. The hair also rapidly grows back when cut, and because of that there isn’t a known cure. This disease only affects around 50 people world-wide.

Aquagenic urticaria is commonly known as water allergy. People afflicted with it will develop painful rash wherever water touches them, making their everyday lives highly inconvenienced.

Klein-Levin syndrome will leave people sleeping for days or even weeks at a time. Luckily, most children who have the syndrome grow out of it by their adolescence.

The post Top 10 Weirdest Medical Syndromes appeared first on Gazette Review.
