In a dazzling career that lasted almost three decades, Evander Holyfield squared up to the most fearsome boxers of his generation. He defeated the most feared fighter of his generation Iron Mike Tyson twice and won a huge number of titles, accolades and the admiration and respect of his peers and fans during his reign as one of the most successful fighters of modern times.

During his professional career Evander earned as much as $500 million but a combination of financial obligations, bad money management and lavish spending has seen his personal fortune dwindle to a tiny fraction of that during his later years, but how did the big man from Alabama earn that much and exactly how much is he worth today in 2017?

Evander Holyfield Net Worth – $1 Million

How Did Evander Holyfield Make His Money & Wealth?

Evander Holyfield’s Early Life and Career

Evander Holyfield was born in Atmore, Alabama on October 19th 1962 into a big family. He was the youngest of nine, and several years younger than his eight siblings. The Holyfield family moved to Atlanta where he grew up in the tough neighborhood of the Bowen Homes Projects and by the age of seven he had begun boxing, where he soon showed great promise. By thirteen he qualified for the junior Olympics and at fifteen he won the Southeastern Regional Championship. At the age of twenty-one he won silver at the Pan American Games in Venezuela, and one year later he won the National Golden Gloves Championship and the Bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Later that year he turned professional with an amateur record behind him of over 160 wins to only 14 losses, with 76 of those wins by way of knockout.

Evander Holyfield’s Professional Career and World Championship Wins

Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield began his professional career in 1984 as a Light Heavyweight, he notched up a perfect run of four wins at that weight, two of them by knockout before moving up to cruiserweight in 1985. That year his unbeaten record continued, with another four bouts that included three knockouts. In 1986, after three more wins, including a knockout in the third round against former World Cruiserweight contender Chisanda Mutti, Evander got his first big title opportunity. He fought WBA Cruiserweight champion Dwight Muhammad Qawi for the title and won the contest in a closely fought battle that ended after 15 rounds in a tight split decision.

1987 saw Evander defend his WBA title several times and unify the championship with the IBF belt by knocking out IBF champion Ricky Parkey in just three rounds. As the year ended he offered Dwight Qawi an opportunity to retake the championship and this time Evander’s victory was far more convincing, knocking out Qawi in the fourth round.

In 1988 the World Cruiserweight title was completely unified when Holyfield beat WBC champion Carlos De Leon in a TKO in the eighth round at Las Vegas, but having now completely dominated the Cruiserweight division, Evander was ready for a bigger challenge and announced his intention to move up to the Heavyweight division and challenge the unstoppable force that was Mike Tyson.

Evander Unified the Cruiserweight Championship in 1998

Evander’s Heavyweight career began with an impressive knockout of James ‘Quick’ Tillis in just five rounds, notably James Tilles had managed to go the distance with Tyson, which was a rare event in any Tyson bout at the time. Evander followed that success up with a seven round knockout of ex heavyweight championship holder Pinklon Thomas, and he moved into 1989 with a thrilling match against another ex-heavyweight champ, Michael Dokes, who he knocked out in ten rounds. Further wins that year, against Adilson Rodrigues and the hard-hitting Alex Stewart both ended with his opponents on their backs staring up at the sky, and the end of the decade saw Evander as the Number one heavyweight contender, a place he had held for almost two years, yet he was still to get his chance to take Tyson on for the title.

Evander Holyfield was due to finally take on Iron Mike Tyson in 1990, but his opportunity to do so was snatched away by one of the biggest shocks in boxing for years, when the virtually unknown 29 year old James ‘Buster’ Douglas beat the undefeated Tyson in Tokyo that year in a bout that sent ripples of disbelief throughout the World. Douglas, who had been a 42-1 underdog at the bookmakers for the Tyson fight took on Evander for his first defense of the title in October that year. The champion strained the scales at 246 pounds whereas Evander was in pristine condition at a rippling 208 pounds. Buster Douglas’s short surprising stint as champion ended after just three rounds, and Evander Holyfield became the undispited Heavyweight Champion of the World, still undeafeted and still yet to meet the fearsome Mike Tyson through the remarkable intervention of James ‘Buster’ Douglas.

Evander’s first defense of his title was against the aging George Foreman, who was 42 years old and weighed over 250 pounds at the time of the bout. Foreman held on for the full twelve rounds but lost by unanimous decision in a one-sided contest that saw him somehow survive several rounds of gruelling punishment from Holyfield. Evander was due to finally face Mike Tyson next, but Tyson was injured in training and pulled out of the fight. The next defense of his title, against Bert Cooper saw Evander knocked down for the first time in his career. He received the mandatory eight count but returned with a vicious series of uppercuts that saw the fight stopped in the seventh round. 1992 saw another old-timer, 42 year old Larry Holmes up as a contender, but he too lost by unanimous decision after a less-than evenly matched competition.

Evander Holyfield Vs Riddick Bowe

Holyfield Vs Bowe was a Thrilling Contest, But ultimately Holyfield Lost

November 1992 brought perhaps Evander Holyfield’s most memorable match, and it was also his first defeat, against the younger, stronger and taller Riddick Bowe. In a fight that was lauded as one of the most exciting match-ups of the era, Riddick Bowe eventually defeated the champ by unanimous decision. The bout was named Ring Magazines Fight of the Year but the new champ soon fell foul of WBC rules after legal issues over a proposed match-up with Lennox Lewis. Bowe and Holyfield met again a year after their first contest for the WBA and IBF titles, and this time Holyfield was the victor, winning the match by a majority decision, although the bout may perhaps always be best remembered by the bizarre interruption of a parachustist who unexpectedly dropped into the action in the middle of round seven, which set off a series of ring-side scuffles before the fight continued. The notorious incident later became known as the ‘Fan Man Fight’.

Evander Holyfield Vs Mike Tyson

Tyson Was Condemned and Disqualified For His Savage Actions.

Evander’s career was interrupted by medical problems in 1994 when he was diagnosed with a heart condition and he subsequently announced his retirement, although he later passed a boxing commission medical exam and returned to the ring in 1995. He finally met Mike Tyson later that year, who was by then the WBC and WBA heavyweight champion, and although Evander was considered the underdog he managed to defeat Tyson by TKO in the eleventh round. In 1997 he met Tyson for a second time where once again a Holyfield fight was dominated by bizarre and unexpected events, this time when Tyson bit a chunk out of Evander’s ear in apparent frustration at being unable to get through Evander’s defenses, the match ended with Tyson disqualified and Holyfield retaining his WBA title belt.

In 1999 Holyfield and Lennox Lewis met twice, the first time the bout ended in a draw, but the rematch saw Lewis winning by unanimous decision. Holyfield attempted to become the first man to win the Heavyweight championship five times but by 2005 New York State had withdrawn his boxing license due to what they saw as his diminishing skills, despite him successfully passing a series of medical examinations.

Evander’s Quest For a Fifth Title Win

Still with his sights set on a fifth title, Evander won a series of impressive bouts during 2006 and 2007, and in 2008 he took on the huge intimidating figure of Russian WBA champ, Nikolai Valuev in Zurich, Switzerland for that elusive fifth belt. Valuev was awarded a majority decision after a fairly unexciting contest but many felt that Holyfield had clearly won the bout. Although still seeking a fifth title and considered a competent opponent for the Klitschko brothers, Holyfield’s opportunity never came, and in 2012 he finally retired for good just before his 50th birthday, declaring that Boxing had been good to him, and that he had achieved everything that he had ever wanted to. Now in 2018 Evendar Holyfield is a boxing advisor to Chinese heavyweight Zhang Zhilei and is helping Rapper Soulja Boy train for his upcoming fight with fellow rapper Chris Brown.

Evander earned in excess of $500 million during his long and successful boxing career, but his legendary lavish spending combined with a series of poor money-management decisions and maintainance payments for his eleven children have seen his personal wealth reduced to just $1 million now in 2018. Although some elements of the press have claimed that Evander is completely broke these days, the popular and likable former heavyweight champion retains a comfortable lifestyle, with his modest wealth supplemented by a number of TV and reality show appearances in recent years. He has had appearances on The Simpsons, minor roles in several movies, including Arthur (2011), and has also appeared at World Wrestling Entertainment events and the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother in 2014. In 2016 he showed that he still has the athletic grace of a lifelong professional athlete with appearances on an Argentinian reality dancing show ‘Bailando’.

Evander Holyfield’s Personal Life & FAQ’s

Evander founded a record label, Real Deal which was the label behind the female R&B group Exhale, briefly famous in 2008 for ‘Chillin’ in Your Benz’ and he also produced the Real Deal Grill appliance that sold through infomercials, but now in 2018 he supplies the Real Deal range of BBQ sauces and a range of ‘Quitters Can’t Be Winners’ T-Shirts via his Website. His earnings are also boosted by occasional speaking engagements. In February 2017 he joined with the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, and promoter Sal Musemeci to promote his new Atlantic City based Championship Real Deal boxing series that aims to elevate Atlantic City as a premier location for World class bouts in the future.

Evander Holyfield’s House

Although now in 2018 Evander is not as rich as he once was, during his lavish spending days at the highlight of his career, he lived in Georgia’s largest single-family residence, a 50,000 square foot, 109 room mansion just outside Atlanta that nestled in a luxurious 105 acre estate. Unfortunately in 2008, when his financial situation became less comfortable the mansion was auctioned off for just $7.5 million, a fraction of its true worth.

Charity, Donations and Philanthropy

Evander Holyfield is a committed born-again Christian and has worked in recent years promoting awareness of homelessness in the the United States and in the UK. He worked with homeless charities and fellow former Championship Boxer Ricky Hatton in Manchester, England in 2013 and is keen to give something back to those who like him, had few chances offered to them during their early life.

The post Evander Holyfield Net Worth 2018 – How Wealthy is the Boxing Champ? appeared first on Gazette Review.

But lavish spending and some bad financial decisions have caused him to lose it. He even filed for bankruptcy in 2003, at that point being $23 million in debt.

Mike Tyson Net Worth – $3 million ($300 million at the peak of his career)

How Did Mike Tyson make his money & wealth

Mike and his mentor Cus D’Amano

Mike Tyson was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1966. His father abandoned the family when Mike was 2 years old. In his teenage years, Mike did a lot of petty crimes, and got in fights with people who made fun of his lisp. He was arrested 38 times by the time he was 13, and soon ended up in juvenile prison. There, his boxing abilities were noticed by a juvenile detention councilor who was also a former boxer. He introduced him to legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato, who became Mike’s manager, trainer and father figure. When Mike’s mother died when he was 16, D’Amato also became Mike’s legal guardian.

As a fighter, Mike’s biggest qualities were his speed and his strength, which made a lot of fighters intimidated by him. He also had great coordination, timing and accuracy. He boxed with his hands high, in the Peek-a-Boo style created by Cus D’Amato. His trademark combination included a right hook shot low at the body followed up with another right handed uppercut to the jaw. This combo knocked out many of his opponents, such as Lorenzo Boyd, Jose Ribalta and Jesse Ferguson.

From 1987 to 1990, Tyson was the undisputed world heavyweight champion, winning fight after fight and earning millions. He won the WBC title in November 1986 at the young age of twenty and became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. He then went on to win the WBA title from James Smith, and beating Tony Tucker for the IBF championship. He cemented his position as the best in the world, by winning against fighters like Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tubbs, Tyrell Biggs, Larry Holmes, and Michael Spinks.

But outside the ring, Mike’s life was more complicated. His first marriage ended in divorce. He was jailed for rape from 1992 to 1995, then again for assault from On February 5, 1999 to 2000. He regained his WBC heavyweight title in 1996. He then won the WBA crown by beating Bruce Seldon, but lost Evander Holyfield in November 1996.

In the 1997 rematch, he bit a chunk of Holyfield’s ear of, which remains one of the most controversial events in sports history. He was fined $3 million and had his boxing license suspended until 1998. He then went back to boxing, winning some fights, losing others, until he retired in 2005, saying he “lost the passion for the sport.”

The Five Richest Boxing Promoters – 2018 Update

Boxing is a sport celebrated the world over as a display of strength, resilience, and tradition. As to be expected there is a lot of money exchanging hands in both the ring and the stadiums. One of the groups of individuals who make the most money aren’t necessarily the fighters themselves but rather their promoters. Here, we take a look at the five highest paid boxing promoters.

5. Al Haymon Net Worth – $15 Million

Promoter of such boxing superstars as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Vernon forest, Al Haymon has made a decent salary just outside the ring. Haymon graduated Harvard with a degree in Economics before turning to the television and music sectors for a career. Originally working with such acts as M.C. Hammer, Mary J. Blige and even Eddie Murphy, Haymon decided in 2000 to try his hand at promoting a more violent form of entertainment. A remarkably private person, Haymon has never been formally interviewed by any news source.

4. Ricky Hatton Net Worth – $40 Million

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton started out his career as a wildly successful boxer with 45 wins and only 3 losses, which garnered him multiple championship belts. After his last fight in 2012, he founded Hatton Promotions and currently manages a dozen separate fighters, ensuring he doesn’t put all his eggs in one basket. Alongside the wealth made in the ring, he’s also used his fan base to make himself a fairly successful author, penning three autobiographies in the span of about 9 years.

3. Don King Net Worth – $150 Million

Easily the most recognizable name in boxing that hasn’t properly thrown a punch, King has been both a master of promotion and controversy. Starting his career early as a bookie during his time at Ken State University, he faced early troubles in killing two individuals. The first was later found the be a violent robber attempting to steal from one of his gambling houses, and the second an employee who owed him $600, whom he stomped to death. After a 4 year stint in prison, King got into the role of a promoter by working with Muhammad Ali to organize a charity event. Not too long thereafter King developed the idea of the “Rumble in the Jungle”, a fight pitting Ali against then champion George Foreman for a $10 Million prize, with King taking a large cut of the money. He was also the mind behind the “Thrilla in Manila” which was deemed to be one of the greatest sporting events in the 20th century and cemented him into boxing royalty. King went on to promote other hall of fame boxers such as Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson and Tim Witherspoon, who all (alongside Ali) ended up suing him for coercion into contracts that by any standard were robbing them blind. Despite all of this, and due to the commercial success of both his fighters and promotions, he was inducted into the Gaming Hall of Fame in 2008.

2. Curtis Jackson Net Worth – $155 Million

It will come as a surprise to most that Curtis Jackson (better known as 50 Cent) is in fact a successful boxing promoter. While his music and even his video game series have garnered him most of his fortune, he has teamed up with Floyd Mayweather Jr to promote fights within New York under the TMT banner. Starting in 2012, he has maintained a roster of primarily featherweight fighters who have seen rather impressive levels of success, though none have been able to outshine the fame of their promoter – yet.

1. Bob Arum Net Worth – $200 Million

Arum is one of the individuals who embody both everything that is right, and so very wrong about world of modern boxing. Before becoming a promoter, Arum started out as a Harvard educated lawyer. Using his quick wit and ability to make deals he became the founder and CEO of Top Rank, who partnered with a then new ESPN to become the sole boxing promoting agency of the channel which provided nearly 20 years of steady income. Arum also recruited such household names as Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, and after he had a dispute with Don King, Muhammad Ali. He also was able to promote Julio Cesar Chavez, arguably one of the most underrated boxers of all time, to great success on the part of the fighter and great fortunes for himself. However, Arum and his company have also been subject to FBI Raids, injunctions by State and Gaming commissions, and severe criticism by fans and competition alike for working the boxing world more like a monopoly than a sport. He has also been repeatedly accused of fixing fights throughout his career as a means of increasing his own wealth. It seems even promoters can fight dirty.

The post The Five Richest Boxing Promoters – Updated List appeared first on Gazette Review.

Sport has become a massive business and an even bigger earner for the athletes in their respective fields. In many cases, athletes earn more from endorsements than from the sport itself. Here is the current list for the top 10 paid athletes in the world.

10) Kobe Byrant – Total earnings: $49.5 million

Kobe Byrant at number 10

Coming in at number ten is Kobe Byrant, professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Byrant entered 2016 with a total salary of $23.5 million. He received a further $26 million in endorsements bringing his total earnings to $49.5 million.

Kobe Byrant was born on August 23rd, 1978 and entered into his professional basketball playing career directly from High School after being recognised as the top High School Basketball player in the country. Byrant has played with the Los Angeles Lakers for twenty seasons thus breaking the record for most seasons with the same team. Byrant announced that he would retire after the 2015-2016 season.

Over his twenty-year career, Byrant has been named as an All-Star a total of eighteen times. Byrant is a fifteen-time member of the All-NBA Team and a twelve-time member of the All-Defensive League.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Byrant however as in 2003 he was accused of sexual assault in Colarado. Although the case was dropped in 2004, it was a difficult period for Byrant with the rumours damaging his reputation. Endorsement contracts he had held with McDonalds and Nutella at the time were terminated by the respective companies.

Although such allegations would have been permanently damaging for many athletes, this did not see the end of endorsements offered to Byrant and as the figures above suggest he has most certainly earned his place on the top 10 paid athletes in the world.

9) Tiger Woods – Total earnings: $50.6 million

Golf superstar – Tiger Woods

At number nine we have golf superstar Tiger Woods who has enjoyed one of the most successful careers of all time in the golfing world. Woods has been one of the highest paid athletes in the world for a number of years. Woods entered 2016 with a total salary of just $0.6 million but received an additional $50 million in endorsements bringing his total earnings to $50.6 million.

Born on December 30th, 1975, Woods turned professional at the age of 20 following an impressive amateur golfing career. Within his first year as a professional golfer, Woods had won the Masters in 1997, one of the four majors and probably the most respected golf tournament in the world. Woods had reached the world number one spot by June 1997, an incredibly impressive feat just a year after turning professional.

During the 2000’s Woods was a dominant force in the golfing world and he spent many periods during that time as World Number One. However, late in 2009, scandal hit Woods when he started experiencing marital difficulties. Following his separation from then wife Elin, many women came forward revealing Woods’ indiscretions. Woods’ bad luck streak was not to last and he ascended to the number one spot once again in March 2013 where he remained for over a year. Since then however, Woods has been plagued with back injuries and has undergone surgery. It is unknown if Woods will return to play again but one is for sure – he will remain a legendary name in the golfing world.

8) Phil Mickelson – Total earnings: $50.2 million

Phil Mickelson

Staying with golf, at number eight is Phil Mickelson. Entering into 2016 Phil’s total salary was $2.8 million with a further $48 million earned in endorsements giving him total earnings of $50.2 million.

Born on June 16th, 1970, Mickelson has enjoyed a highly successful career in the golfing world. Mickelson acquired the nickname ‘Lefty’ for his left-handed swing which is unusual as he is other-wise right-handed.

Mickelson has won three of the four professional major tournaments – only one of sixteen golfers to ever achieve this feat. The US Open is the only major that Mickelson has not been successful in winning, however he has come close finishing as a runner-up no more than six times!

Over the course of his golfing career to date, Mickelson has spent over 700 weeks in the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings and has reached world number two several times. With Mickelson’s golf career still going strong, his hopes of winning the US Open and adding to his already impressive earnings.

7) Kevin Durant – Total earnings: $54.1 million

Kevin Durant at number 7

Kevin Durant is a professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA. Durant had a salary of $19.1 million in the past year as well as endorsements of $35 million. This gives him a total earning of an impressive $54.1 million.

Twenty-seven-year-old Durant played one year of college basketball, winning numerous awards throughout that year. He was then selected by the Seattle SuperSonics however he relocated to Oklahoma City after his rookie season where he still plays today.

In 2014, Durant signed a ten-year deal with Nike. The deal is estimated to worth approximately $300 million.

Durant has been referred to as a “scoring prodigy” but is also well known for his kind and approachable demeanour off the court especially where his fans are concerned.

Durant has turned his hand to other fields too with him starring in his first movie in 2012 – Thunderstruck.

6) LeBron James – Total earnings: $64.8 million

LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers

Staying with basketball, coming in at number six on the list is LeBron James. LeBron James is an American professional basketball player with the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA. James finished 2015 with a salary of $20.8 million as well as receiving a further $44 million in endorsements. That brought his total earnings to a very nice $64.8 million.

James started off playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2007 and stayed there until 2010 when he left to join Miami Heat. The move was highly publicised by the media at the time. After playing four seasons with Miami Heat – two of which he won back to back championships – James made the decision to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers whom he still plays with now.

Similar to Durant, James had a number of high-paying endorsement deals. He too turned his hand to acting and starred in his first movie – Trainwreck – in 2015.

5) Roger Federer – Total earnings: $67 million

Tennis sensation Roger Federer

In the battle of world’s richest athlete, Lionel Messi finds himself ranked at number four. With an impressive salary of $51.8 million as well as endorsements to the value of $22 million, Messi entered 2016 with total earnings of a massive $73.8 million.

Lionel Messi is a professional footballer from Argentina. He plays as a forward for his club FC Barcelona as well as for his home country, Argentina. He had established himself as one of the world’s greatest players by age 20 and his talent and success has continued to grow throughout the years. Messi is considered by most to be one of the greatest footballers of all time. That title is well deserved as Messi has set some impressive records over the past few years. He is the only player in the history of football to have won the prestigious FIFA World Player of the Year award or the FIFA Ballon d’Or a total of five times. What makes this feat even more impressive is that four of those times were consecutive.

Lionel Messi has been compared many times over the years to long-time rival Christiano Ronaldo. Whatever about on the playing field, Messi has fallen short of beating Ronaldo on this list.

3) Christiano Ronaldo – Total earnings: $79.6 million

Christiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid & Portugal

Coming in at number three is Christiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a Portuguese, professional footballer. He plays as a forward for his club Real Madrid in Spain as well as being the current captain of his national team, Portugal. Ronaldo entered 2016 with a salary of $52.6 million. Along with endorsements of $27 million, Ronaldo had total earnings of $79.6 million.

Like Messi, Ronaldo has often been touted as the world’s best footballer with some going as far to say he is one of the best footballers of all time. By the time Ronaldo had reached just 22 years of age, he had been nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year or the Ballon d’Or. He won that award for the first time the following year – 2008 – and had won it twice since in 2013 and 2014.

Ronaldo has turned his hand to other fields too with him opening his own fashion store, co-designing his own range of socks and underwear and he’s even planning to launch his own fragrance. With all this going for him, it comes as no great surprise that Ronaldo features so high on this list.

2) Manny Pacquiao – Total earnings: $160 million

Filipino Boxer – Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao is professional boxer from the Philippines. He is the only eight-division worlds champion the boxing world has ever seen and in the 2000’s, he was named as fighter of the decade. These accolades have helped push Pacquiao to number two on our list. Over the last year, Pacquiao has had a total salary of a whopping $148 million as well as a further $12 million in endorsements. That totals to a massive $160 million making it no surprise that Pacquiao features so highly on this list.

Pacquiao has been named as the best Asian fighter of all time and with good reason. Pacquiao is the longest reigning fighter to feature on the top ten list of pound-for-pound fighters.

In 2015, Pacquiao met with long-time rival, Floyd Mayweather in the ring in what was being described as the “Fight of the Century”. The fight did not live up to the public’s expectations however it was a big earner for both fighters so it comes as no big surprise that they feature in the number two and number spots of this list.

1) Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Total earnings: $300 million

At number one – Floyd “Money” Mayweather

The number one spot is filled with the ever controversial Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather is a now retired professional boxer from the US. Last year he fought Manny Pacquiao after long negotiations. Although deemed a disappointing fight by fans, Mayweather dominated and won. Mayweather had a total salary of $285 million along with a further $15 million in endorsements, meaning his total earnings reached an incredible $300 million.

Mayweather has had a long and successful career and is considered to be one of the greatest boxers of his time. Mayweather has never been defeated since he turned professional, a phenomenon in itself.

Mayweather has faced controversy with him serving a jail term for domestic abuse but that did not affect the revenue he has earned. Earning his spot at the top of the list, they don’t call him Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather for nothing!

The post Wealthiest Athletes in 2018 – See Who Makes The Most Money appeared first on Gazette Review.
