After years of watching comedians I believed that compiling a list of the greatest comedians ever would be a relatively simple task, but oh how wrong I was. After a few hours of compiling a list of great comedians I’m left with something resembling a telephone directory, and I’m still leaving some of the funniest jokers of our time out, so with that in mind I’ve gone back to basics and compiled a list of ten of the most influential, controversial and popular comedians of our time, although based on the subjective nature of comedy, no two people would ever agree on the same ten names to be included. So if you’re disgusted that I’ve left out the funniest human alive in your opinion, then let me know in the comments, I’ll take it on the chin, after all nothing can be as bad as being shouted at by a room of hecklers, although for the first comedian on our list, that exact event made him a legend in his own lifetime.

#10 – Bill Burr

William Frederic ‘Bill’ Burr was born in Canton, Massachusetts in 1968 and moved to New York City in 1995 when his career was just taking off. His observational comedy with a dark twist soon saw him making regular TV appearances with his anti political correctness stance on modern life, but it was in 2006 in Philadelphia that he became the undisputed king of rage-fuelled humor. Many comics from The Opie & Anthony Show were on The Travelling Virus Comedy Tour, performing at large venues nationwide and the tour was a huge success, until Philadelphia. The crowd were drunk, unruly, loud and disruptive, and every comedian had been booed from the stage after their performance. Bill was last in line for the abuse, and after Dom Irerra had left to a crescendo of jeers, he decided to give the crowd a taste of their own medicine. Every minute he would countdown the time remaining before launching into another profanity laden jibe at Philadelphia. The event became known as the Philadelphia Incident and it made Bill one of the heroes of comedy.

Early Life

Artie Lange was born in October 11, 1967 in Livingston, New Jersey. His mother was a homemaker, and his father was a general contractor who installed antennas. Artie didn’t do well in high-school, having to attend summer school in order to graduate. But he was good at sports, especially baseball, becoming an all-county third baseman.

When Artie was 18, his father became a quadriplegic after he fell off a ladder at work. Times were tough for his family. He and his mom had to work full time in order to support the family. Artie took his father’s job and installed antennas, then worked as longshoreman at Port Newark. Artie said that The Howard Stern show was one of the few things that could still make his father laugh after his accident, and they’d spend hours listening to it. In 1987 the Lange family contacted celebrities, asking them for items to auction to help with the medical bills. Howard Stern was the only one to respond, sending them an autographed jacket. Artie’s father died in 1990, four and a half years after his accident.

Career Beginnings and Mad TV

Soon after his father’s death, Artie started performing stand-up comedy. He got a job as taxi driver. The flexible schedule allowed him to daily sets at comedy clubs, then go back to work. He then joined an improv group, performing shows at Caroline’s on Broadway. This got him signed to the William Morris Agency, and he soon started appearing in commercials.

In 1995 Artie went to Los Angeles to audition for Mad TV. He was selected as one of the eight cast members, out of the 8,000 people that auditioned. He got a big signing bonus, plus $7,000 per episode. Around this time, Artie developed an addiction to cocaine. After he filmed 9 episodes of the show, he attempted suicide after running out of cocaine. He took some time off to complete a rehabilitation and counseling program, and then returned to the show for the second half of the first season.

In 1997, Artie appeared in the movie Dirty Work, alongside Norm Macdonald. They also worked together on Norm Macdonald’s sitcom, The Norm Show. While doing the promotional tours for these projects, Artie and Norm appeared on The Howard Stern show. Artie told a few funny stories about his past, which Howard Stern really liked.

This is why in 2001, after the show’s head-writer and on-air personality Jackie Martling left the show, Artie Lange was one of the people up for taking his spot. After being on the show a few more times, Artie was hired in October 2001.

After a verbal confrontation with one of the show’s employees, he threw a CD at their head, and then had to be restrained by other people in order to not assault them. This happened again, almost identically, but with a different employee.

On January 2, 2010, Artie attempted suicide by drinking bleach and stabbing himself in the abdomen nine times with a 13-inch kitchen knife. He was found on the floor by his mother. After undergoing surgery undergoing surgery and spending a week in the hospital, he was transferred to a psychiatric ward. Sirius management said that Lange was welcomed back on The Howard Stern Show after he recovered. But Howard Stern chose not to let him return, saying he didn’t think it would be good for Artie’s health.

The following year, Artie spent three weeks in a detox facility, then two and a half months in a rehabilitation facility in Florida.

He created the Fat Albert character for his comedy routines in the late sixties, and was able to get it made into a children’s cartoon. From 1972 until 1985 “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids” educated and entertained children everywhere. Cosby gained increased recognition in the seventies for his film work, but it was when he created “The Cosby Show” in 1984 that he gained wide spread appeal. He went on to make several shows in a similar vein up until the year 2000. In recent years he has been mired in litigation over allegations of sexual misconduct. More than fifty women have accused him of a myriad of sex crimes, ranging from rape to sexual battery. He was released on $1 million bail in December of 2015.

#3 – Matt Groening $500 Million

Creator of not one, but two beloved animated comedy shows, Matt Groening is a legend in the business. He created the comic strip Life In Hell in 1977. At its height the strip ran in over 250 newspapers and caught the attention of writer and producer James L. Brooks, who soon met with Groening to ask him to produce a few short cartoons for “The Tracy Ullman Show”. Originally he wanted him to adapt Life In Hell, but fearing a loss of ownership, Matt instead pitched his idea for a dysfunctional family and “The Simpsons’ was born. “The Tracy Ullman” show faded into obscurity, but “The Simpsons” is still going strong to this day. In addition to “The Simpsons” Matt is famous for creating “Futurama”, one of the cleverest shows ever made. It is estimated that Matt pulled in $58 million last year.

#2 – Larry David $800 Million

Co-creator and head writer of one of the most successful comedy shows of all time. Seinfeld. Larry David teamed up with Jerry Seinfeld to produce a pilot for NBC. “The Seinfeld Chronicles” was the result of that partnership. Originally NBC was trepidation about producing a show that didn’t seem to be about anything, little did they know that they were sitting on a gold mine. Every sitcom made since owes some measure of its success to “Seinfeld”. Larry would go on to create “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, starring a semi-fictional version of himself. The show received wide-spread critical acclaim. David makes most of his money from the syndication of “Seinfeld”, in addition to DVD sales. It is estimated that on the day “Seinfeld” went into syndication, Larry made in excess of $650 million.

The big kahuna of the comedy world. Jerry Seinfeld lends his name and his talent to one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. NBC’s “Seinfeld” is the most influential comedy show ever made, and the Jerry still makes a killing off of it. From syndication, to DVD sales anytime someone mentions the word, he gets a check. After “Seinfeld” ended Jerry went right back to stand up, so unlike others in his field he did not go in for a lucrative television or movie career. It didn’t seem to matter though. These days he host a car show, where celebrities drive one of his many vehicles to go get a cup of coffee. The show has been very successful.
